With the kind of readers I have, it is a pleasure to publish this Owner Review for the Maruti A-Star car. This is the first ever attempt to publish owner reviews. If all goes well, I will publish more such car reviews from readers based on the feedback. Author of this review is Prof. D. K. Khurana who heads the department of Tree Improvement & Genetic Resources at Dr. Y. S. Parmar University of Horticulture & Forestry, near Nauni (Solan) in the state of Himachal Pradesh. Here goes the review…
I have been driving mostly Maruti’s various models from Gypsy to the famous Maruti 800. Then to Alto, Zen and lastly A-Star. I had driven Maruti 800 for 1,25,000 km overall with trouble free working till about 60,000 km. After which it started requiring regular repair and at 1,20,000 kms I had to replace its clutch plates. Then I changed to Alto-LX and it also gave me a good 60, 000 kms of trouble free service. While changing a flat tyre, the studs of the wheel became free and after that at 78,000 kms the bearings started giving trouble. At that point I changed to A-Star. I have often driven Gypsy whenever I had to go to Rohtang or interiors on non-asphalted roads. In such places Gypsy did well and particularly I liked the gears of Gypsy which were crisp, short throw and smooth. The gears of Mahindra Logan were also similar which I liked the most. Had it not been for interiors, and exterior, Logan’s engine, pickup and gear box were much better synchronized than all other vehicles which I have test driven.
My job involves traveling quite often, normally I drive about 50 kms daily and during weekend it can be about 200 or 300 km. The longest drives have been up to 500 kms through the hills on a given day or 600 km in the plains. Here is the detail about my experience with A-Star so far :
Maruti Suzsuki A-Star’s slogan should have been “A-Star@stop at everything but its engine”. I say so since, except for its engine, there is nothing good about it. When I test drove it and the Hyundai i10 it had definite advantages. It was able to negotiate a gradient of 1 to 15 from 1st to 3rd gear at 2000 rpm whereas i10 was not able to negotiate in 1st gear at 4500 rpm. Its interiors appealed, but outward look especially the indicators sitting on top of headlamps appeared little odd, but still I went for it. Since then I am used to this oddity. I have already driven 19,000 kms on this vehicle and still engine gives the power which I could not get with maruti-800, alto-LX or old Zen. It can negotiate the gradients where 800 or Alto would require 3rd gear and Zen 2nd gear, A-Star does it in 4th gear.
The pick up is excellent, the air-conditioning and heating is very good. But stop at that! its 3rd gear had a play right from the beginning, which still does not work the right way. Sometimes it engages when you have to shift gears in quick succession for acceleration. On rough roads, even in 2nd gear it runs, too quickly and you have to control its acceleration by breaking. If you are a lazy driver, who doesn’t like shifting gears on highways or when slowing down and then accelerating, the pickup even in 4th gear is very good. There are times when I increase the rpm slowly, even then the car has slowed down to 30 km.
But the body of the car started squeaking when the car had hardly done 3000 km, the noise is very irritating when you start driving the car in the morning on cold winters and it is too much. As the day progresses, the noise reduces a bit. Given the road conditions in India and particularly on the patchy roads in the hills, the thuds of the shockers are also annoying. The earlier driven Maruti cars had given me no such worry as compared with the A-Star. The tyres are gone at 18000 km and the average mileage which I have been able to get in optimum driving conditions on the highway have never exceeded 18.5 kmpl. Normally it gives is between 14 to 15 kmpl on hill roads under continuous driving and not in city driving conditions. The boot space is small but adequate if you have go on weekends with two small suitcases, but the LX has slightly more space than the LXI where space is taken by the speakers. The inbuilt music system with side speakers is adequate if you are not a big music lover. But one of the speakers diaphragm is already gone within 1st year! The red glow of the different dials may not go well with all, though it appealed to my son.

I recently brought a used 2010 model Maruti A Star ZXi model, which was very less used. When i went for a long drive on highway for appx 1000km i gave me a mileage of 16kmpl with AC. Please suggest weather it is performing good with respect to mileage. i drove at a speed of 90kmph to 100kmph.
Kichhh says
Hi,
16 seems to be low to me., I do get consistently 17+kmpl with ac and with little sprinted drive if its a normal drive with ac, then 20+ kmpl
if its highway without ac and normal driving then 23+kmpl
The maximum FE till date i have got it 29 kmpl with very sedate driving manner on highway with very less traffic.
Naveen Kumar says
Thanks Mr.Kichhh, thanks for your reply. Please suggest me how to increase the mileage of my AStar.
Chandan says
dear friends, I am A Star holder from past 1 and half years, i am getting problem in milleage, so can i get at what speed it gives good milleage in long drive.
umesh derebail says
Automatic version would anyday be better than geared one, go for it guys, i believe the milege will improve by 3 notches, i am getting 14 km and 18 km on A Star in the geared version.

The information provided on Maruti A Star car was very useful. It is always good to know that their are blogs so dedicated to providing information that is seriously concerned with the reader’s needs. Thanks for sharing your insights with us through your blog.
umesh derebail says
Mr Renjith please remember that you should constantly use AC at least for 10 to 15 minutes per day when you run your vehicle, otherwise the effectiveness of AC will be lost. Secondly i feel you should check whether you have applied hand brake while driving, which may be possible since your pick up is sluggish. Finally if the problem persists get it checked at your dealer. The AC in my car is working perfectly even after 1 and half years touchwood. Be careful of your brakes if you are not owning ABS braking.
renjith says
Hi umesh,
thanks for replying. Well, Im getting this sluggishness only after putting the AC ON and that that too with two average adults. I usually drive morning and in evening and AC I dont use to dont increase my petrol bills :(. Why do you say that we need to use AC daily ?
Do you feel power sluggishness and Is the AC chilling for all occupants in the back seat also ?
Renjith
umesh derebail says
AC should be switched on after one or two kms of run on higher speeds preferably, initial you will feel a slight sluggishness, it indicates the power supplies are getting diverted to your ac unit. Run the AC for 15 minutes with higher fan speed and than reduce your fan speed to 2 or 1 depending on the chillness you require. It is better to run AC daily so that the gas does not solidy and reduce your AC effect. Switch off AC before 2 to 3 minutes before you halt your car. I have been doing this and getting the best result. AC is quite powerful in A Star. This advice is applicable across all Cars.
Renjith says
Hi guys.. I have a question on the AC performance. Today I made a short trip to Mysore road from Bangalore city at noon on my new astar AT. Loaded with 2 adults. Though the hatch easily took most of the bad roads, I found that the AC is very very feeble and not enough to chill or put us in comfortable driving atleast the front seat passengers!. I end up putting blower in top with lot of fan noise. Whats your opinion ?
On top of that I was not able to move the car above 40 kmphr most of the time..overtaking is almost impossible with AC ON. Well I was using D mode only, as most of the road inclinations are less. Im thinking whether, do I need to put in D3 or 2 mode while in AC 🙁

Rajiv says
ummm m a star has no such problem nor my friend’s so there might be something wrong with ur car just get a check on it!
Dharmveer says
Check if your AC is running in Ventilation mode and yes you can use gears in A star AT where ever you feel like as normal car L,2,3,D release throttle momentarily while switching gears.
Please mention about the milage of Astar AT
umesh derebail says
hello Renjith, congrats on A Star, 4 healthy adults pick up can be sluggish, secondly unless you have ABS braking system, it is advisable not to speed, particularly mysore road with gravels around can be tricky, tubeless tyres have tendency to skid more. I have had bitter experience two times. The vehicle can negotiate ghat section well, if it is raining once again don t take chances unless you have ABS braking. GOOD LUCK
Dibyendu says
Hi,
I have drove from delhi to mathura then bharatpur, deegh till agra and then return back. the total km was 675 and it cost me not more than Rs 2700. So i guess the mileage i got is awesome and with AC 🙂

Hi,
Thanks for sharing this. The review is quite good. It would be great if we get reviews on car finance or insurance.
umesh derebail says
If the reports of AT is true, than the car is definitely going to grab attention. At 4.34 lakhs it is loaded with features i suppose. The same configuration in any other models will cost at least 5.5 lakhs. One precaution is visibility and skidding during rain without ABS. So one has to definitely choose ABS, till than speed will be compromised.

Dibyendu says
Hi,
Recently I have done A-star with more than 130 km and amazingly the car was not shaking at all. If it was any other car it sure have been wobbling at this speed. The car has a very good grip on road. A good composition for small families. My car is top mmodel ZXI- which costs me 4.34 lakh. It has techometer, ABS, Air Bags, in built music system with four speakers, fog lamp and many other feature. So good money value also…..

– Mileage in Highway :- 20 (with ac)
– Driving and handling is superb.
– good control even in high speeds 120 – 130 km/h
– Top speed i touched 150 km/hr.
Murali Mohan Gade says
Dear Mr. Janakiraman,
I am Murali Mohan Gade from Hyderabad. I am also interested in purchasing Maruti A-Star VXI Automatic Car, since I am not that comfortable with the Manual Transmission. Can U please suggest me that whether I can go for this A-Star Automatic Car or should I consider Hundai i-10 Sportz Automatic Car? Which is better? Price wise A-Star Auto is 80,000/- less than the i-10 Sportz A.T. But is A-Star good in terms of comfort, mileage, space etc when compared to i-10 A.T? Please suggest me? How reliable are the Autotransmission cars compared to the manual Transmission cars? Based on your feedback, I will go for A-Star Automatic. Actually we are 3 adults (I am being Tallest with 5 ft 7 in height) and one Kid only travel in the car for most of the time. Please reply me. Thanks in advance.
janakiraman says
Dear Murali,
First up all price is less than I 10,second service is good compare with hyundai.Third auto transmission i drived many roads such as village, city and express high way, driving is smooth.Normal manual gear car gear changing time automatically some time engine switch offed, but this auto transmission never switch off.this is simple, you put gear mode to D position, and presh accelerator automatically car will go,speed or whatover you can control only by accelerator.auto transmission coming with fully loaded such as power stearing, power window, inbuilt music system,AC and ABS.
regarding space front seat ok,im also taller, you can adjust seat, but rear only little difficult for fat peoples.compare with Alto,i 10 this is good.fantastic car.im working in abroad, within 2 months i drived 16400 kilometres, really fantastic car.still im not facing any problem.
Mileage in express high way it will come around 20km/litre with AC, in city 15 to 16 km/litre with AC.
Murali Mohan Gade says
Dear Mr. Janakiraman,
Thank You very much for your very informative response. Actually I am not bothered about the Rear Space, because only 3 adults + 1 Kid only travel in the car for most of the time and that too only in the City. I am not interested to go for a long drive in my personal car, I rather book a Cab or go by a public transport system in that case. Even any relatives come, I prefer to book a Cab for them to go anywhere in the city. The only thing what I am thinking is why very few people are buying A-Star A.T compared to i-10 Sportz A.T, eventhough the price of A-Star A.T is leass than i-10 A.T by Rs 80,000/-. Even the Maruti Dealers here in Hyderabad are not having any Test Drive A-Star A.T Car. I don’t why Maruti is not publising this great car? Are you staying in India at present? because you told that you are the first person to purchase this car in Tamil Nadu. Actually, I want to talk with you, and get all my doubts clarified. Thank You very much for your information. Bye.
janakiraman says
The problem is Indians are not like automatic version (bcz of mentality).you know, i test drived this car in china not in india. Before that i dnt anything about maruthi launched this automatic version. But my view this is very excellent in city drive.lot of my friends like this car.i dnt no why maruthi is not interested to publish this car?? most of the car is going to export in the name of ALTO.This is really good for city traffic
Renjith says
Hi Janakiraman,
I really need your opinion on practical mileage with astar automatic. Is it possible to get 20kmpl on highway.
Renjith
Janakiraman says
Yes definitely, tomorrow i’m planning to go on long drive, approximately 1400 kms, i will tell u after 3 days
Renjith says
Hi Janakiram,
Thanks for the reply. I booked astar AT today. Though, main concerns I have is the rear leg room and the fuel efficiency. The shop guys persuaded me a lot to buy ritz and told astar AT cant cross 15/litre and the ARAI limit is quite thoeretical only. But, Im eagerly looking for your practical figures next week and take decision.
Renjith
Renjith says
Hi Janakiram,
Were you able to get the mileage figures ?

Hi Janakiram, how was the trip? How was the performance & mileage on highways?
Renjith says
Hi Janakiram,
Are you back after the trip. Eagerly looking for the report.
Renjith
Renjith says
Hi Janakiraman,
Finally Im booking an astar, thinking that AT will be helpful for my wife in bangalore traffic and more safer. It was a very hard decision across Beat Diesel, RitZ and Astar AT. I have few queries:
1. Im amazed by the figures you gave for mileage. In other forums also nobody has reported this much good figures. this gives me the inspiration to buy. Are these the figures u got after initial 1000 km ? And what method u used to calculate mileage. The ARAI reported figures is only 17kmpl max.
2. I see only 2 speakers are provided. Are there outputs from Head unit to support two more speakers.where to place them.
3. I have a subwoofer + amp, is there a way to connect to the HU in this small hatch !!
cheers
Renjith
Janakiraman says
yes i completed my trip, long driving approximately i drived 1200 kilometres. For express high way with ac 20 kilometres, and in city chennai bcz of traffic mileage come aroud 15 /kmpl
Renjith says
Hi Janakiram,
Thanks you. very impressive figures indeed. Im also planning to do a long trip as my new Astar AT car has come home. Im worried whether it can handle 4 adults + 2 babies. Im planning to travel to Coorg which involves hill ranges and sharp U turns. What is your opinion regarding the space comfort for a long drive. What precautions we need to take as getting an AT repair workshop/mechanic is tuff on such remote areas.
I felt the AC is not powerful enough, in Bangalore. I wonder if there is some issue in vents. Also, while raining the back window visibility is almost nil because of mist. And I also felt the suspension is very stiff when compared to swift or Beat.
Readers opinions welcome.
Renjith
naveen reddy says
hi renjith
i’m planning to buy new Astar AT.So,howz ur experiance with this car and can u just give tips to get good mileage
Renjith says
Hi..
In my expereince the mileage and space are the biggest probs.
Rear/side views are some times a proble,
Expect 10kmpl in city on average max 12.
I never got the mileage as Janakiram reported. Im still doubting the calculation he is using. Even maruti engineers are telling me max will be 18 only on highways. Space for rear passengers is very less…as you may know.
Tips: Dont accelerate much immediately : Also press accl around 20 to 50% only. Reduce frequent braking.
Driving is good in this 5L segment. But, If the budget is there, try new swift dezire AT, it gives good space + better mileage. New Ford Fiesta AT is the best AT car in 10 L segement with mileage better than manual !!.

Hi Renjith,
I am planning to buy an A STAR AT. I stay in Mumbai and my major requirement is for City driving and occasionally going long distance(may be once a year).
1. Can you please share Milege details in brief, what averegae the car gives after say 1 year?
2. And while going long distance say from Mumbai to Goa, does the car give any problems, because I heard that the Pick up sometimes fives problems.
3. I also heard that pick up while overtaking a vehicle is not so good.
4. What is the use of a 3rd gear which is there in A star AT?
Thanks in advance.

umesh derebail says
Maintainence cost in Maruti is the cheaper when compared to all other manufacturers. Now coming to your choice of cars, it is better to decide faster for purchase since prices are bound to move upward after diesel price hike. Looks & pick up A Star, Milege and maintainence Alto, Space and feature Wagor R, I 10 Looks and performance. So take your pick. Remember A Star is the highest exported car from India to Europe. It sells as ALTO abroad. Stop at Nothing
Mukul says
i am planing to take my first. shall I go with astar, i10, alto k10, wagnar or zen estilo? please suggest. mileage and pickup must be good. I have 4 member family. please give your valuable feedback.
umesh derebail says
@ Dr Biren, well VXI is higher version than LXI where certain features are compromised. ZXI model is the highest which has ABS and safety air bags too. Now it is choice dependent on your budget.
Secondly regarding the pulling power with 5 people around there is a certain lag particularly on the highways. For city it is absolutely okies. If you are short than visibility may be a problem.
How to negotiate the schemes on offer is a tricky one, you have to visit 4 to 5 maruti dealers to find out what the freebies are on offer. Price wise all dealers are supposed to sell at the same price. It is only free accessories varies according to the dealers how much margin he retains on the accessories.
Advantage of A Star is that it looks like a formula car, secondly Euro 5 compliant, and road clearance is quite good. All the best
Dr. Biren Chauhan says
Thanks a lot Mr.Umesh…A star rocks in the international market by the name of suzuki alto and nissan pixo…hoping that it will give me the same comfort and true value for money…
I appreciate your efforts…thanks again..have a nice time..

Hi All,
Indeed good review and comments I get to read here.
BIG question to all a-start owners….
Q> is it good to go for vxi than lxi?
lxi-3.88L and vxi-4.18L…
Q>city ride with 5 people mom dad and 3 bro n sis around 25yrs..would they come in easily for 100-200 km ride once in 15 days or so?
Q> how to negotiate for the best price with the dealer if its possible?
Q> if i m allowed 5000rs of free accessories than which i should opt for?
thanks a lot in advance..
need quick replies as i m gonna book in few days..
thanks,

I believe the console is weak point of A Star, and since it is almost a strip down version some compromises must have taken place, but still the vehicle vibrating on a smooth highway is unbelievable. This must be a cumulative effect of driving on a bad highway or bad roads with high speed. If you take the price of Swift and A Star, there is almost 2 lakhs difference, and 1.5 lakhs with Ritz, so some compromise is due. Anyways wish us good luck guys.
sanjay says
I agree with Prof. khurana…on lot of points he mentioned…but I found most of the reviews on various sites….total waste ,un real , mis leading except few points , why i m saying this bcoz last month only i purchased my 3rd car as A star , i m hving GM’s Aveo( for last 2 yrs), santro for last (11 yrs) , when i drove A star on highway at a speed of 90km/hr it starts vibrating and when it crosses 100, the whole dash board looks like a vibrator with sounds coming from each and every corner…highly disappointing performance on highway…also i can bet on my santro which is 11 yrs old is still much smooth/refined on highway with a speed of 100 plus…which is total missing in Brand new so called A star…i strongly reccommend maruti guys to rename it as Z Star (Mean ZERO Star)…with Maruti u CAN NOT expect much on quality…they only play pricing game and hv build good service network in last 20 yrs and that too bcoz competition was not there…but now we can feel the maruti’s downfall after entrance of europian
player like VW, GM ..Hyundai is a Big big threat to Maruti…Guys for sure u will not hv easy time ahead ( the way u ruled india car mkt for last 20 yrs..thats bcoz there was no competition …now now ur game will be over …if u keep on launching cars like A star)
ravi says
Are you a Hyundai saleaman?
Pakon says
I don’t think what you think is right, coz hyundai Santro mileage is less as compare to a star and it’s smooth in Highway too. Maintenance as compare to Santro it’s much less, so I believe in comfort, looks, pick up a star is the best

Dibyendu says
I am driving A-star for the past 1 years and alsmost 13k kms. I have no problem in handling this car now. I agree with umesh we have to understand the vehicle as every model is different form the other. I dorve a chevrolet spark and santro these are completly different from each other. Every car has its plus and minuses. The only problem with this car is it has a boot space scarcity. Thats why it is good for a family of not more than 4. I am completly satisfied with the car sometimes the 3rd gear stuck but it happens rarely with me. The santro gear also got stuck many times. When you get the feel of it there is no prob in driving it. The pick up is sensational 🙂
umesh derebail says
Hi Mohan, to be fair and square i have driven more than 10 k kms after i bought A Star, intially one has to understand the vehicle, it has tendency to stall, and pick up is sluggish, once you get hang of it, the vehicle is a formula car in your hands. The noise levels are not so high except you feel the body is light. Milege one can expect 19.7 kms on highway with AC on, without AC 21 km max. This has been proved by ARAI tests too. The big advantage is it Euro V complaint and highest exported car from India. Of course there are issues on transperancy of dealings and detailing on technical issues.
Finally we got to check out on wear and tear of tubeless tyre, which the prof says was gone at 18000, i have not yet come to that stage. Regarding other maintainence expense we got to check out. Extended warranty covers 2 additional years.

Hi Rajesh,
If you will have driver to drive your car then go for BEAT else A Star is better then any other small car. Its driving experience, fuel economy is better than others. I10 1.2 is expensive and I10 IRDE is not that good. I have A Star and my bro has I10.
Boot space is OK not good in A Star compared to other two. But if you talk about value for money then i think A Star is best car in 4 Lac.
I would suggest you to have test drive of each car, you will know.

The review is good but it ends abruptly without saying whether author is overall happy with it or not. Detailed review nevertheless. I find A-Star the sportiest looking hatchback after Swift. From front and rear it looks grrreat. But side view is not very appealing. A-Star looks sporty while i10 looks utilitarian. Coming to autos, A-Star auto costs nearly 75 to 80 thou less than i10. Also, A-Star auto returns good fuel economy compared to i10. My vote goes to A-Star.
Dev. Khurana says
I had written the first review and commented that all is good with A-Star except for body which stated ratting at 3000 km, now after doing 40,000 km the engine is still good but the way body is squeaking, it appears as A STATE ROADWAYS BUS rather than a car.
dinlith says
even though there are many problems for this car, its a real wonder in offroads. From my experence i can say it rocks in offroads. I even took the challenge of riding astar in the harsh roads at parunthumpara where only jeep is allowed. It even gave me a happy ride through a small water stream.

Hi Folk,
I bought A-Star VXI 2 months back and already completed 4000 km, had driven in city as well as in highways(delhi->jaipur, delhi->lucknow, delhi->masoorie). Frankly speaking if you love driving and sporty person and ur budget is 4 lacs then you might not get better car then A-Star. It gives very good driving exp. But if you are the person wants to sit in rear seat then it is not for you. Dor me it is better than Alto K-10, Spark, I-10 IRDE etc is any condition and any time.
– Space is OK,
– built in music system is OK.
– Mileage in city :- 16.5 – 17.5 (without ac).
– Mileage in Highway :- 20 – 22 (without ac), 19 – 20 (with AC)
– Driving and handling is superb.
– good control even in high speeds 120 – 130 km/h
– Top speed i touched 150 km/hr then my bro started shouting on me 🙂

A-star has the highest satisfaction level among cars under Rs4lakhs as per Hindustan Times survey. Suzuki Alto (Maruti A-star) wins over 600+ cars to take the NRMA crown of least expensive car to own and maintain. Maruti A Star gives a stunning mileage of 19 kmpl 🙂
Rupesh says
Maruti A Star will come with automatic gears in this July 2010. Its almost certain. A Star already gives a great mileage of 19 kmpl and the automatic will be the most convenient option maruti can give th A Star..
Shyam says
Maruti A-Star is much wider compared to above cars hence 3 people can sit comfortably in the rear seat, it has big wheels hence the car has good grip over the road this makes drive in the car more comfortable , interiors are also pretty good, mileage & performance is also good . I get a mileage of 19 kmpl! 🙂
Lalit says
Maruti A Star is sheer value for money car. It has got all safety features, AC cools quickly, handling is good, riding comfort is better than other small cars, it has got decent headroom and leg room for small family like mine. Also, the enthusiastic characteristics is A Star’s mileage, man it gives me 19 kmpl on an average, that encourages me to drive A Star to stars!!!

Hi,
I am going to buy my first car, but getting confused between A-Star, Wagonr Lxi, Figo Exi, and the new entrant Chevrolet Beat? Looking for good performance oriented fuel efficient car.

Nice review, the A-Star is a star in terms of handling and performance but the space and comfort can be a let down.

GREAT!!! I was happy, while I read through the beautifully descriptive faults of A-STAR. Before finalizing on RITZ, we had i10 and ASTAR in mind. We did test drive A-STAR and somehow were not convinced. Yippeee, I so much appreciate our decision of going for RITZ….
Mohan says
Good choice smarty! How about an owner review from you on Ritz?

Your blog is on a roll 🙂 Reviews from horse’s mouth 🙂 But I must say, a honest, first hand review. I was initially thinking of switching or rather exchanging my alto with A-star but for some reason, I didn’t do it 🙂 And I am glad for not exchanging after reading this review!!

Thanks Vineeta! Glad you found this review useful.
