I know many of you are still busy in playing FarmVille game on facebook. As mentioned before on this blog, here I am sharing the brinjals (Egg Plant) from my GardenVille! You can read about that mention in one of my previous posts here. Yes, home grown brinjals from my tiny rooftop garden. All these pictures have been clicked over a period of time as the plants grew bigger. Most of these were planted in soil filled bags instead of conventional pots. It was again a kind of experiment to see how good the plants grow in such bags. I am pretty happy with the outcome! The size of brinjals from the plants in bags were considerably bigger than the ones in pots. You can witness that it yourself in the images below. Click on images to see them bigger.
Now, you must be wondering about one different colored brinjal. Of all the greenish white brinjals, why only one is yellow in color? Well, I left it to ripen so that we can dry the same later on to extract seeds. With these seeds, we can start a fresh season once again! If you were wondering about the ‘BT Brinjal’ controversial stuff, here is some clue for you. Seeds can’t be extracted from plants like what I have mentioned here with those genetically modified BT Brijals. Everytime you need Brinjal plants, you got to buy them from a Bio-Tech seeds company. That is one of the major ire for farmers to oppose BT Brinjals.
Also to provide a quick update on the Chrysanthemum flowers, they have been blossoming all this while for over 2 months! Now the time has come to remove them and change to some other flowering plants. Brinjal plants may yield for another month or so. Stay tuned to know what I am going to grow next π

I am being tempted to convert my roof top into a brinjal garden…. π
B. Rathinasabapathy says
I think you are having roof graden. This is wounderful example to follow every one.
Angad Achappa says
Very nice writeup!!
Nandhini says
Do you use just plain soil alone or do you add special manures too?
Mohan says
I use the soil that is rich with decomposed leaves and cow dung. No special manures as such.
Maralyn Jones says
Nice experiment with your garden and crops too..
Mohan says
Thanks Maralyn. Nice to have you here!
Lalit Patnaik says
Hi Mohan,
Great to see someone growing his own crops that too without using the excuse of being an urbanite. I had always wondered how people spend hours playing FarmVille on FaceBook and when you ask them to plant a real crop/tree suddenly they are ‘too busy’. Glad to see an exception π
Samir says
Congrats for a great harvest. It’s cool. I really love gardening myself. However, the point I would like to make is about BT Brinjal.
The fact that the fruits shouldn’t be rather than they can’t be used for getting seeds for the session of planting is that the GMOs can’t be allowed to sexually reproduce in a natural environment, because the recombination and modification of “genes” might lead to something completely undesirable. That is primarily due to recombination and mutations. You can control the first one, while the second is not in your hand.
Though another accusation might be that the GM research companies are looking to exploit the farmers monetarily. This could be true, but there is a better reason for it (as explained above).
Mohan says
Thanks Samir! I am no fan of BT either!
Shanmuharajan says
Hello Mohan,
I have given below the procedure to prepare Brinjal fry. Enjoy !
No No iam not a cook …. he he i just used 3 keys in my keyboard
1) ctrl
2) c
3) v
Method of cooking brinjals fry
brinjals fry is simple ,heat oil in a pan ,ad onions ,chillies ,curry leaves to it ,Stir for few minutes and add garlic ,turmeric powder and salt .Stir well till onion turns pink .
Add baingan pieces & stir well βclose the lid of the pan till brinjal turns to be soft .
Now your brinjal fry recipes is ready ,if you like you could add mustart seeds also in the beginning & allow it to splutter before adding onions & other ingredients .
Try to cook brinjal fry with minimum oil & allow the brinjal to get cooked in the steam by closing the pan with a lid & keep low flame .
R Saraswathan says
You have an amazing hobby planting vegetables in rooftop! I enjoyed the post as well as the pics. I live in an apartment and I have no access / permission to my rooftop!
Mohan says
Thank you Saraswathan! Hmmm that is one big drawback of apartment complexes when compared to independent homes.
Urban Green says
Wow! Lucky you! I’ve always envied people who manage to sustain vegetable gardening…
And thank you for visiting my blog, and stopping by to say hello. Yes, am back and the show is on π
See you around, Urban Green
Mohan says
Why envy? you start one too! Believe me it isn’t that difficult!
Olivia Mukhopadhyay says
Wish Jayram Ramesh was subscribed to your blog!
Nice lovely little gardening experiment.
Mohan says
hmmm don’t you think that comment was a bit too over hyped? π thank you Olivia!
sharon says
A relief to see a real gardener addicted to the game:) Thankfully I am completely over my 3 month long addiction with farmville. I am in awe of your beautiful vegetable garden. Do you live in an apartment? Can brinjals be grown on an apartment terrace? What about tomatoes?
Beautiful hobby indeed!
Mohan says
No more an ‘Addict’ Sharon!! It was a temporary mindset to learn the game on how indulging it can be.
Thank you! No I live in an independent own house. You can grow them if you have sufficient sunlight reaching the terrace and the plants. Tomatoes is pretty easy compared to brinjals, it doesn’t need that much of sunlight nor the care π
prophet666 says
nothing like fresh food and the satisfaction of eating what you grow
Mohan says
Absolutely… Taste is the proof for that satisfaction π
Sunitha says
Nice garden mohan. I like gardening but not finding time to do it, may be because of my laziness.. After seeing your garden its inspiring me to start gardening… thanks a lot. Can you give me few fresh brinjals to prepare some spicy curry?
Mohan says
Thanks Sunitha! Welcome to my blog π Good to hear that so many are getting inspired…
Sorry, these brinjals are for self consumption to beat the inflation π in a small way.
Anish K.S says
Thanks Mohan, its a nice work, me to like farming but there is no space for me :(, i wish to buy some land for farming.
Mohan says
Thank you and welcome to my blog π
shraddha says
that is awsome…

i have never tried farmsville and have pledged never will….
my fb activity is ….accept friend and fan page invites….skim through other’s activity..comment some, like some , and out in less than 10 minutes…i do this two times a day atleast….i have also automated it to receive all my twitter comments……but it has been enough to garner peoples interest in my blog and am 6-7 short of hitting 300 fans mark!! woohoo!!
Mohan says
Thanks Shraddha! You are blessed to have such a large backyard… unfortunately, it costs a fortune to possess such a home in Bangalore!
Vinni says
Hehe!
I loved the yellow brinjal! π How do you mange them on your rooftop ??
Vinni
Mohan says
I know.. something different is always the center of attraction π
Well, I usually use large pots.. but this time for a change I used soil filled bags for brinjals! Welcome to my blog Vinni π
Neilina says
Great!! Good work! Seems facebook has inspired many people π
Mohan says
Oh NOOOO! I have been busy with my garden stuff since my childhood! Read my other posts under ‘Garden’ section to know about my garden better π Thanks Neilina!
Farila says
For once it is nice to read not a controversy about the GM Brinjals but just fresh ones from garden we love. I have lived most of my life in Bangalore and I love the city. Had home grown veggies back there… I miss Bangalore so much. Sigh!
I appreciate your garden very much and also your love for it.
Mohan says
So true, off late brinjal has become a synonym for controversy in India! Thanks to the officials, now it is put aside. Thanks Farila!
Braja says
I love my veggie garden, but rocket salad is my favorite π
Mohan says
Good to know that… I haven’t tried that yet, let me try soon π
Jeevan says
What more can you ask for than home-grown fresh brinjals and other veggies !!!
Fresh vegetables are good for health and taking care of these plants is good exercise for the body too.
Mohan says
Can’t agree more! But true… sweating out a couple of hours in the weekend taking care of plants is really nice π
Lavi says
Thats really great.. Growing vegetables at home is great.. I always think of doing that..Fresh flowers and vegetables from our own garden is always exciting.. Good work. Also it gives a relaxation from the usual busy day…
Mohan says
Not just the relaxation Lavi, satisfaction from that achievement is something everyone should experience. Start one soon π
Magali says
Wow! Great! You must be sooooooooo proud! Do keep it up! π
Mohan says
Yes Yes!!! Thank you π
Tarun Mitra says
Can’t say much coz I am allergic to brinjals π
But BT products do have many constrains..
Mohan says
Hmmm, nevermind! Yeah.. they have advantages too… China has started farming genetically modified rice!
Dave Joneja says
Wonderful. Great work.
Mohan says
Thank you Dave!
hitesh says
You can’t eat farmville’s brinjals. See, this is good! real brinjals to eat. You are growing many things at that “Tiny” roof garden……you can now call it the big garden…cause it has become a big part this blog….. π
Mohan says
Hah.. that is very true… Bigger garden means more work n little time for blog.. which one you want? π
SushJ says
Once upon a time there was baingan. People called it Brinjal but baingan preferred being called baingan. And so it was called baingan by every one including Mohan. Slowly and slowly baingan grew up and so did Mohan. Mohan became fond of baingan. Fond meaning real love that is. He would not let any one touch baingan. While all the other friends of baingan were cared for and played with baingan himself was lonely because Mohan was not always there. Most of the time Mohan was busy blogging. baingan became suspicious of computer. By and by he got convinced that Mohan was not in love with him but with his computer.
And thats when he turned yellow with envy. Yes, baingans turn yellow with envy, at least this one does. Thats the one you see in the picture above. As for its seeds, Mohan has to be very careful- These are envy seeds. All the baingans which grow out of these seeds will be yellow envy baingans. Still want those seeds, Mohan? Think again.
Mohan says
I liked your humorous story! Good one π The fact is, I purposefully let it turn yello π The yellow Baingan will be the source for next gen π
SushJ says
You mean you knew that your baingan was jealous and you still let it turn yellow? HMMMMM!! Very bad, Mohan. OK OK. Joke is getting out of hand here. Good Brinjals nay baingans nonetheless.
Mohan says
hahahaha… good try π ok… Baingans going forward.
Maithili Desai says
Hey awesome experiment! and an interesting way of throwing light on the BT brinjal issue… Good luck with the next crop !!
Mohan says
Thank you! and welcome to my blog Maithili π
lostworld says
I don’t eat brinjal at all.. there is only kind of brinjal sabzi I like which my mom makes. Anything else with even a hint of brinjal I don’t touch.
But that doesn’t stop me from being a fan of your rooftop garden Mohan !! :-)) What other vegetables do you grow?
Mohan says
Oh.. you are missing Brinjal curry’s for sure! You should taste few of them that my mom prepares… you will be diva of brinjal there after! Right now it is just Chillies, Brinjals and Tomatoes π
chhabi says
Yes nice collection from your roof top garden.Nice idea to use the soiled filled bags.Yes have you ever tested the curry from Brinjal specially Baigan Ka Varta if not try this time.Yes I can describe as Baigan means (Bai+gun) means no meaning. Means no vitamins and It can be mix with all the vegetable in the world.
Yes it is my thought.
Mohan says
Are you kidding? No vitamins in Brinjal?… that is new to me. Yes, I have tasted Baingan ka Barta (Not sure how different it is from Varta π ). Thanks!
chhabi says
don’t worry both are same .
thanks
Mohan says
Ah.. thanks for the clarity π
Rekha says
how nice, feels so good when you cook with fresh home grown veggies. I am inspired to grow something on my terrace too.
Mohan says
Good to hear that! Yes, you can’t compare the freshness of home grown with those bought from market π
Swaram says
This is such a satisfying and rejuvenating activity π Cn u pls send some over Mohan π π
Mohan says
Yes.. it is indeed very satisfying! I can send few… but it will cost you a fortune… game?
antarman says
wow..its so heartening to see your own plants…once I had a full fledged kitchen garden…I an totally against BT brinjal or anything else which is genetically modified, secondly we shouldnt do anything which makes our farmers deoendent ont these firms.
Mohan says
With technology we should advance… but not at the cost of promoting for someone’s greed π I am all game with good research and positive results.
vineeta says
Hey wow.. u really maintain ur garden very well π Hats off.. I always wish to hv such garden but then is satisfied with three plants at my place.. first i shud learn to maintain them well π
Mohan says
Thanku Thanku π
Yes, bringing up plants is no different from bringing up kids is what my mom tells π it needs continuous attention to get the best.
shruti says
hey Mohan, I love BRINJAL’s..Am just back from GUNTUR and got the chance to relish different varities of Badhnekai dishes…they r simply lovely….
U seems to be mastering this game of garening…am soon gonna step into this…keep it going buddy!!!
Mohan says
Who doesn’t?? π I am sure you would have tasted ‘Noone Vankaya’ (Enne Badanekayi) curry.. that is my fav!
Good to hear that… look forward to know about your garden π
subu says
Oh you have a vegetable garden. A really good thing and easily doable. Gives a lot of satisfaction too. Govt should make this mandatory for all homes. You are conveying a nice message here !!
Mohan says
Hi subu, YES! Very true… I grow different kind of plants throughout the year on a rotation basis. Well, depending on government enforcement for all such simple things is a bad idea. We can do lot of things on our own. Like having a Solar Water heater, rain water harvesting systems etc., That is the need of the hour. In my view all these should come from within than by law.
Shrinidhi Hande says
so as a farmer what is your take on BT brinjal?
Mohan says
I am not in favor of BT unless there is sufficient amount of research that answers all the doubts raised by farmers. We need not hurry in introducing BT Brinjals in India, I appreciate the decision taken by Jairam Ramesh on this issue.
Shrinidhi Hande says
Ok.
Mohan says
π Whats your take?
Neha says
hey Mohan,
I love bringal ka sabzi..any preparation of it and I am all smiles…i can even have it fried with salt and pepper on it π
your rooftop garden has amazing egg plants..the farmville eggplants harvest in two days; did you know this? π
Mohan says
Cool… me too! Haven’t tried that salt and pepper thingy… let me try it sometime π
Well, i used to be a farmville addict sometime back… glad I have come out of it now! Yes, I knew the farmville harvest times for various crops, see my earlier post if you are still into it. It has lot of tips on making the best of farmville in short time.
Neha says
oh I have quit farmville too..but I do visit my farm once in a while π it is an addiction; so better stay away..
Mohan says
For me it was tough to stay away… hence I blocked that application completely!
