As promised before, here I am presenting the colorful produce from my garden – Chrysanthemum flowers! These flowers are commonly known as Sevantige in Kannada while in Telugu it is called Chamanthi. With the amount of flowers that have bloomed on our roof top, probably for next few weeks we don’t have to spend on buying flowers! Not just that, our interior decoration with these flowers for aesthetic enjoyment has multiplied. Also the fresh fragrance emanating from these flowers is an additional relaxing agent for the hard working minds! Do I need to say more?
For more information on Chrysanthemum flowers, refer to Wikipedia here. If you plan to grow these flowers and need a sapling, the booking is open! Of course, needless to say that I will be giving them for free – you may have to pick it up from my home and it will be a part of my project ‘spread the GREEN love’ :). If you wish to see the produce from my garden in the past, refer to this link.
One more trivia about Chrysanthemum – these plants have been shown to reduce indoor air pollution by the NASA Clean Air Study. I think that is a sufficient incentive for growing these flowers!
Padma says
Hi Mohan garu,
How to grow Chitti Chamanthi plants? More importantly where do i find those plants?
thanks
Padma
Rupa says
hi, As i am adding cow dung i am getting small worms like white and black as dots on leaves and flowers
what to do?
Mohan says
Rupa, better you repot and then plant again with more than 50% of new soil. Also make sure you put the plant in sunlight to get away from worms.
Veena says
Hi Mogan … Great to come across your blog. I am basically into bonsais and have recently picked up some amazing colors of Savanthge!! I just want to know if the plant is permanent or do we start again from seed once the flowering is over? Can vermicompost be used instead of cowdung? Your early response will be highly appreciated as I don’t want my new babies to suffer π thanks a ton!!
Mohan says
Hi Veena, I am moHan and not moGan! Nice to know you and your interest on Bonsai. Well, these chrysanthemum plant main stem can be cut till about a couple of inches above the ground once the flowering season is over. The same plant will pick it over again into flowering mode. Yes vermipost is good too.

Hi Mohan. I have planted a small sevantige plant( white colour) in a 2Ltr cold drink bottle. I have cut the bottle into half and planted in the bottom half of the bottle. I have made holes at the bottom for the water to drain out. How many times should I water the plant? And will the plant grow nicely in the bottle?

wow the flowers look great. You have a good produce. What all do you use for the potting soil. I landed up at your blog looking for info on growing Chrysanthemum…I am basically trying to have good supply of flowers for my mom’s daily pooja
Mohan says
Well, I mix the soil with a mixture of decomposed cow dung. Make sure an easy way for excess water to drain out from the bottom. Rest assured, you will have awesome produce!
VS says
Thanks for the quick reply. For now I will have to wait to enjoy Chrysanthemum blooms π in my balcony. I was thinking its flower itself serves as a seed, but when I dried up a flower and opened it up I didn’t find any seeds. I will have to wait until I buy some Chrysanthemum seeds or a sapling.

Mohan, these are beautiful pics. Please give me some tips on growing sevanthige
I picked up a pot but they died π Needless to say, I suck at gardening!
I really envy you your green thumb!:)
Sharon
Mohan says
Hi Sharon, welcome to my blog! Thanks π
You need to choose right kind of pots. You must have gone with smaller ones which are probably filled with not so good quality soil. This plant needs sunlight and 2 times water per day. Don’t use any chemical fertilizers… change the soil just before planting these in the pot. Also, ensure there is room for excess water to pass through the pot’s bottom hole. Stagnant water kills/deteriorates the quality of flowers π
Chintan says
Hey dude… your garden looks more colorful than my farmville layout. Too good man – also, I think you are in the wrong profession :D. I too will plan for some plants in pots.
Mohan says
Thanks Chintan π Obviously my real flowers and plants have to look anytime better than that virtual farmville game! Who know where my destiny is? I might land over that profession anytime π
Shilpa Naik says
Wow! Awesomeness. So many flowers! Mohan reserve few for me pleaseeeeeeeeeee…
Mohan says
Thanks Shilpa! Sure, drop in after a couple of months π
Shruti says
Hi Mohan,
Which area in blore do u live in?? The flowers look amazing… How easy or difficult is managing these flowering plants?? Do u have them in pots?? How often do u need to change the manure (soil) ? sorry many questions.. We stay in a small flat and i’d love to have flowering plants . Just wondering if it’ll be feasible.
Mohan says
It is pretty easy, needs a bit of care and a lot of love π Yes, I have them in pots. Usually after the plant season, I go for soil change. I bring in the soil and mix it with the removed soil from pots and mix well with a bit of composted soil so that it gets all the nutrients. You just need to plan on the available layout and the kind of plants you want to grow. There are a variety of plants you can choose from to suit your options.
kavita says
How lovely…very pretty flower,i am happy to learn that you are a SPREAD THE GREEN LOVE messenger and practitioner.I will definitely collect my share of sapling from your lovely garden one day.My mom-in-law is into buying seeds and watering the sapling stage ,she has Dahlias,pom-poms(marigold),impatient and few others .For chrysanthemum we will have to wait for another month.Happy gardening Mohan.Loved the information about these acting as an air purifier.
