Chrysanthemum flowers…

October 25, 2009 in Garden, Nature | 38 Comments

As promised before, here I am presenting the colorful produce from my garden – Chrysanthemum flowers! These flowers are commonly known as Sevantige in Kannada while in Telugu it is called Chamanthi. With the amount of flowers that have bloomed on our roof top, probably for next few weeks we don’t have to spend on buying flowers! Not just that, our interior decoration with these flowers for aesthetic enjoyment has multiplied. Also the fresh fragrance emanating from these flowers is an additional relaxing agent for the hard working minds! Do I need to say more?

For more information on Chrysanthemum flowers, refer to Wikipedia here. If you plan to grow these flowers and need a sapling, the booking is open! Of course, needless to say that I will be giving them for free – you may have to pick it up from my home and it will be a part of my project ’spread the GREEN love’ :) . If you wish to see the produce from my garden in the past, refer to this link.

One more trivia about Chrysanthemum – these plants have been shown to reduce indoor air pollution by the NASA Clean Air Study. I think that is a sufficient incentive for growing these flowers!

Btw, its a coincidence I guess.. This weekend I bought a few pots for my house. I’m quite illiterate so have no clue what the names of the flowers are. All I know is – One is Tulsi, and another is rose bud !! They loook sooo cute. Can’t wait to see them blooming .. It all started thanks to your earlier post. Yay!

Hi Mohan,
Which area in blore do u live in?? The flowers look amazing… How easy or difficult is managing these flowering plants?? Do u have them in pots?? How often do u need to change the manure (soil) ? sorry many questions.. We stay in a small flat and i’d love to have flowering plants . Just wondering if it’ll be feasible.

It is pretty easy, needs a bit of care and a lot of love :) Yes, I have them in pots. Usually after the plant season, I go for soil change. I bring in the soil and mix it with the removed soil from pots and mix well with a bit of composted soil so that it gets all the nutrients. You just need to plan on the available layout and the kind of plants you want to grow. There are a variety of plants you can choose from to suit your options.

Hi Sharon, welcome to my blog! Thanks :)
You need to choose right kind of pots. You must have gone with smaller ones which are probably filled with not so good quality soil. This plant needs sunlight and 2 times water per day. Don’t use any chemical fertilizers… change the soil just before planting these in the pot. Also, ensure there is room for excess water to pass through the pot’s bottom hole. Stagnant water kills/deteriorates the quality of flowers :)

Meandered in from IndiBlogger. Kannada in the post drew me in. Beautiful flowers and beautiful pics. Nothing beats the pride and satisfaction of something home-grown. Maybe it’s all that love that goes into nurturing :-)

Thanks Rekha. Yes, it is a kind of addiction once you start growing plants. I do water them twice a day with dedicated couple of hours for removing the wilted leaves/cleaning up the pots during weekends :)

That’s interesting to know that the lovely Chrysanthemum reduces indoor air pollution. They are also the basis for non toxic ( to humans and animals) insecticide spray.

Yup.. they are based on that NASA study. Thanks for the additional info Sukhmandir :)
