My passport validity was about to expire in a couple of months and I was thinking of renewing it sometime soon. Very recently got to know about ‘Passport Seva Kendra’ (PSK) through a friend and decided to use this newly launched facility to renew my passport. All the information was available on their website about the documents, process, fee structure etc., It was indeed a very smooth option to fill out all the form detail online as well as submitting the same through their website. Also, there was an option to schedule the appointment with passport issuing authority online!
To be doubly sure, I called up their toll free helpline 1800-258-1800 to ensure I have the right set of documents and the process followed is correct. Since there was no change in address, I just had to drop in personally at PSK at a pre-scheduled time with current passport which is about to expire. Well, the other documents included the appointment acknowledgement print out and 2 self attested photo copies from the current passport.
I was told explicitly that there is no need to carry photographs as they have set up a digital imaging system to capture photo there itself while processing the form. Also, I was told that the fee for reissue of passport can be paid at the processing counter. All is well until this point.
Rest of the story as it unfolded made me realize the famous saying – “if everything goes smooth without any hurdles, surely you are in wrong lane”. Well, I had the appointment between 1:30pm – 2:15pm at Passport Seva Kendra, Lalbagh road, Bangalore. Reached the premises and got inside the building at 1:00pm upon showing the acknowledgment print out of the appointment. Had to stand in the queue here too to get a token for visiting processing, verification and issual counters. The queue wasn’t moving at all. After an hour one of the official came out and said the servers are down and it may take a while. Later on got to know that the servers were down since 11:30am! Thanks to Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) who have partnered with ministry of external affairs, India to empower the IT systems/infrastructure and to maintain these PSK kiosks.
Again at 2:30pm, one elderly official came to announce that they will switch over to manual mode of passport processing since the servers haven’t been restored and they are not in a position to retrieve the forms that applicants had submitted online. They decided to process those who had filled in forms in hand which weren’t submitted online. Online applicants were told to BUY form (which costs Rs. 10/-) and fill it up, ensure to have passport size photos, then head over to processing counters to get the work done. A fool in me, relying too much on computers had gone there without photos. I had 2 options : Either get the photos and fill up the form all over again manually or visit again some other day hoping to be lucky by then. Since there was a huge crowd and had to attend to work decided for the latter option.
So, this is what I learnt from todays experience:
1. Don’t rely on computer systems at government offices YET!
2. Always carry photographs no matter what whenever you need to fill a form related to govt offices.
3. Carry a pen in the pocket whenever you are out (my parents still shout at me for not complying to this since my college days, there is a bigger story on why don’t like to keep one… may be sometime later!)
4. Expect not to get the work done through govt offices as per the schedule.
Thanks for reading, hope you will not repeat what I did and may you have all the luck to get the “God’s work” done on time, as mentioned in the book! Remember, there is an engraved quote on the Vidhana Soudha – “Government Work is God’s Work”… YES! I understand that now in a better way.

I applied for a re-issue under Normal category on 15th May 2012. My police verification was completed on 19th June 2012 and the local CID branch forwarded by file to RPO on 10th July 2012.
On 12th July 2012, the status on PSK website changed to “Passport application under review at Regional Passport Office”. I called up the PSK call center to ask more about this status. They said that my passport application is on hold and that I should visit RPO physically to know the reason.
I see here that a lot of people have got this status, can anybody tell me what exactly this means? Or is it just like a workflow status? Did anyone need to visit the RPO upon getting this status? And did anyone eventually get his passport even after getting this status?

Remember the passport is always “reissued” not renewed, renewal is done only for short validity passports. Since the passport has expired 4 years ago you will get your passport reissued just like a fresh application, the only difference being that you will mention you current passport no. and file no. in the form.

it is not mandatory if your staying at current residence for more than one year. In case you are staying less than a year (Father/Mother/Guardian) kindly give your previous address.

Now your filled up form is deleted from the system, you have to fill a new form on website and submit again. Then you can take another appointment.

Since more than 45 days have passed you can go to RPO to check the status. They are bound to give you a reason for the delay. You can file a request under RTI for this. This might help you to expedite the process.

I have visited RPO two days back, where i came to know that since my police verification was from two places first one my current residence where i have stayed around eight months was adverse and form my previous residence was clear (primary and secondary) now they are putting for approval for granting again. But i was amazed to see the people with lots of complaints against RPO Ghaziabad for non ordinary delays so i don’t have much hope of expedition in my case. Please advice me on further course. If you read through Nikhil’s comments on similar cases below, these are all normal workflow statuses. Your passport should get dispatched in 1-2 weeks.
As far as my status is concerned, it is still the same today ‘Police has completed verification process on 16/07/2012. Your passport will be dispatched after ‘Clear’ Police Verification Report is received at Regional Passport Office. You would receive an email/sms once the passport is dispatched.’’

I had the same problem.. its just that the police verification is not completed or if the verification is completed , then the documents have not been forwarded to the RPO.. these days it is online, so once the successfull PV takes place , it should be forwarded same day and then you would receive a message that the PV has been received and application granted…….blh blh
So in your case , I would suggest you visit the local police station or the CID office.

There is a passport mela happening in all Passport Seva Kendra’s across the country to solve this huge influx of applications. This was initiated last weeked and PSK offices work on weekends too to help those who are unable to secure appointment. Please call up Passport office helpline numbers mentioned in this article. This should be of some help to a large extent.

Which is your passport location? This is only PSK portal and your internet speed problem I would say. When so many people are trying to access PSK portal at a particular time response from PSK portal will be minimum and at that time, if you have a higher speed like more than 1 Mbps net connection you will win the situation! Or if you have any other issues please reveal it and let us try to solve!

As you are aware that the passport mela is going on you can take advantage of them, you see there is also a bright side to it. Since many passport seekers have used and are going to use it that means the appointments would be easy to procure. Don’t try to get an appointment from any unauthorised person as Mr. Mohan said. Concept is simple. If your police verification is done and you want passport immediately then you need to meet passport officer and he/she will prioritize and you will get passport with in a week after that. Any status given is just work flows and not give the sequence in strict sense as it depends on it’s user.

Receieved passport on 20th of June..went to postoffice and collected the same.
Police verification done on 23rd June..Went to police station on 22nd and requested the concerned police to to come on 23rd so that I can provide the signatures of all the references.. He visited at around 5 and it took then 10 min to complete all the formalities..Things went smoothly throughout the process..
only problem that I faced was with respect to booking a slot.. After a week of failed attemps to book slot online I approached an agent and got the slot booked for a very nominal amount (<500..tried to investigate how he booked slot but he was clever enough not to reveal:))

I gave my previous passport for renewal in 2007 at Jaipur RPO,due to any reasons my police enquiry was not completed and meanwhile my house address changed . I waited for the passport around 2years,but didnt recived my passport . Then I went for enquiry at Jaipur RPO they said that my file was closed and I should apply for fresh passport with the paper the Office gave to me at enquiry attached with my new application form which was only proof that my file was closed and I didnt had any proof regarding my passport (no photocopy,no recipt) . Then I applied for new passport through PSK Jodhpur . My application was clear with the verification zone but the Granting zone officer forwarded my application to the APO and the APO told us that further processing of passport would be held at RPO and my application has been escalated to RPO . Now,the status at the passportindia.gov.in show’s that “Passport application is under review at Regional Passport Office” , They told us to visit the RPO as soon as possible . Now my query is what is meant be “Your Passport has been escalated ” as told by the Officers at PSK . and they also told us that you need to take the Fee Recipet and visit RPO . Do I need to take any appointment for RPO ?
What should I do Now ? Please Help asap

On 14th May we completed all police formailites and on 17th status changed to ‘passport application has been granted’.

Actually I got a call from police station in evening of 13th May
about police verification. I told him I will come tomorrow
morning with all documents which I submitted in PSK..
Then next day we completed the verification in police station!!..

My passport status is showing currently as “Police has completed verification process on 14/05/2012. Your passport will be dispatched after ‘Clear’ Police Verification Report is received at Regional Passport Office. You would receive an email/sms once the passport is dispatched.” For Arun also this status was showing on 8th may and the status changed on 15th May to “Passport application has been granted and Police Verification Report has been submitted. You would receive an email/sms once the passport is dispatched.” Passport finally dispatched on 17th May.. as per Arun ccomments.. Totally it took around 10 days (May8 to may 17)for him to dispatch the passport. For me the status is showing from 14th May.. hoping I will also get the passport before this month end.

on 18th morning (before 8’o clock) i went speed post office in domlur & collected it..
It took only 31 days for me ..
If u r in a urgent need of passport.. you can visit the passport office in kormangala..They will give you the Exact status of your passport (status shown in portal is not accurate)
If you are planning to do a visit, then go little early(try to reach there before 8:30)
I went there at 9:30 & my token i got was 150 & waited around 2 hours to get my turn.

I have submitted the passport application today i.e., 19.05.2012 in Tatqal early morning and system prompted me to take appointment after 6.00PM today. I loggin in at 6.00PM today and tried to take an appointment but surprisingly again i have a message try on 20.05.2012 i.e., tomorrow. I spoke to Toll Free and they said we can’t take more than three appointments from the same I.P. address ( hope this is some thing new to this thread, :-). However, this lappy hasn’t been used previously to take an appointment. Mean while i have tried to take the appointment from my desktop and there is nothing new (no appointments). Do you have any idea (assumption) when i could get the appointment? i am in hurry coz i suppose to travel June 1st week and i have applied for re-issue of my passport which has been expired in june last year.
I have applied for passport in Lalbagh PSK.
Surprisignly AP PSK’s will show the date of appointments available (though it may after 15days or a month) but why not Karnataka PSK’s?

Dear Satish,
The system is designed in a way so that each e-mail id will be a unique user id and each user id will allow you to fill and submit 3 forms at a time. So you can get 3 appointments for each user id. In case one application in a user id needed appointment for say 20th may but due to some reason he had to cancel and rebook this can be done as many times after cancelling the previous appointment, as once the person goes to the PSK the file number is generated and that application will remain on the server for about 120 days. Whereas if you submit an application and you do not book an appointment, the application will be deleted by the server after ninety days. In this case you will get an sms as well as an e-mail informing you that the application is being deleted.
Now we come to the appointment problem you are facing. First thing is that the appointments are released by the authorities based on several factors like the load on PSK, staff strength available etc. Some times the complete capacity of the PSK is not utilised because of which people like us suffer. Since you have to apply in tatkal you have an advantage over others and that is ” It has come to the notice of the Regional Passport Officer, Bangalore that few applicants are not able to get appointment under the new Passport Seva at the four Passport Seva Kendra viz (Bangalore – 2 PSKs, Mangalore -1 PSK, Hubli -1 PSK) under Regional Passport Office, Bangalore.
Those applicants applying under Tatkaal and those who are in need of passports for Educational, Medical, Visa interview, job purpose etc. and not able to get appointments are hereby advised to come to Regional Passport Office, Bangalore located at 80 feet road, Koramangala 8th block and they will be issued out of turn walk-in appointments to submit their applications on priority basis in any of the Passport Seva Kendra as mentioned above. This scheme has been implemented with effect from 21/02/2012. Applicant should come to this office with valid printed ARN (Application Registration Number) and also with required and supporting documents for the processing of his/her application.
It is reiterated that these appointments are for Tatkaal and Normal appointments only for people under the categories as mentioned above (Educational, Medical, Visa interview, job purpose etc.). Applicants will be entertained on first come first serve basis and without appointment.”

This has now changed to:

What I don’t understand is my verification was already done on the 1st/2nd of May. Then it changed to the status in my above comment, saying it was under review at RPO. Now it has changed to verification done. Could someone shed some light on this please? I am totally confused.

What I wanted to know was if anyone had seen a status like mine in the first post, and then changed into what’s in the 2nd post. It seems odd that police verification is being reviewed @RPO in the first place, and the next update is that police verification is complete, and once report reaches RPO.
Seemed very weird to me. What do you think?

It’s been 60 days since I applied. My police verification though done on 1st May say online that police completed it on 22nd May 2012.
Still same status on website. Does it make sense to go to the RPO, or just wait? I’m really tensed.

No, still same status. Might go to the RPO this week. Been a little under 3 months of applying and over 2 months of PV. That said, lots of people here have had no issues, so hope you too dont have an issue.

If you have a passport you can travel !!!! If your mother IS a govt. employee then why does she require a police verification ?? is she retired ??? Anyways you must have got the passport under tatkal scheme and the purpose of tatkal scheme is to cater people who need the passport urgently. Check wih the PSK @ 1800-258-1800 and with the embassy of the country where she intends to go !!!

Better to go with renewal as it provides good background for your new application. Also, when you are applying for passport there will be a section asking about the previously applied passports.

You will have to go for Re-issue. This is the option used for issuing a passport if you have ever possessed one in your life. You will have to provide the details of the current passport in the application form. Remember suppressing facts is an offence. And renewal is only for short term validity passports to increase their validity, in all other cases its re-issue. There are provisions for every case. refer to passportindia.gov.in, there you can use document advisor to know about the documents required for re-issue with address change. Best Of Luck !!

i ve applied for renewal of my passport with no adress change on 26/04/2012, they said it takes only a week , when i enquired last week at the RPO ,kochi ,they said it could take atleast 35 days ,apprently there is a cold war is going on between Tata consultancy staff (private sector )and the Passport office staff (Union gov sector staff),as of from 1st March 2012 onwards 75% of the passport apllication process being carried out by Private staff ,among this we ,the ordinary peaople suffer and till 11/05/2012 no sign of getting my passport yet.

4 One year statement (with transactions)/ Passbook of running bank account (Scheduled Commercial bank excluding Regional Rural banks and local area banks)
5 Income Tax Assessment Order
6 Election Commission Photo ID card
7 Proof of Gas Connection
8 Certificate from Employer of reputed companies on letter head
9 Spouse’s passport copy (First and last page including family details), (provided the applicant’s present address matches the address mentioned in the spouses passport)
10 Applicant’s current and valid ration card
11 Parent’s passport copy, in case of minors(First and last page)
Note (For Document No. 1, 2, and 3) : Atleast 2 bills are required – One bill should of be of last year and the other bill of current year.
Note (For Document No. 8) : Only public limited companies can give address proof on company letter head along with seal. Computerised print-outs shall not be entertained.
Note (For Document No. 10) : If any applicant submits only ration card as proof of address, it should be accompanied by one more proof of address out of the given categories.

The whole process is going to take 45 days, santosh in your case the application is in last stages, now the status may change to “passport application under review at RPO” and then again to the current one and then it will change to the one with dispatch information, this can happen quickly in 3-4 days or a little slow ie. upto 15 days. Arun in your case also the status might change 2-3 times before dispatch of passport. I would advise you to give some time for processing. After the end of 45 days ( working) only you should approach the authorities to check for any kind of problems. Otherwise your statuses are normal and both will receive your respective passports soon !!!

Check with PSK @ 1800-258-1800 because according to the site the passport of the parents is needed, basically its photocopy is needed (the name of spouse should be mentioned in their passports) but since they are abroad this is a complex case and only the authority will provide you with correct information.

I have applied for a new passport at the PSK Kolkata.
I could secure the appointment only after a weeks try as the site always had notice on with the notice “all slots booked”…
So any way I am happy that I could get the appointment ..
I have uploaded scanned copies of my
Birth certificate (date of birth proof)
Bank passbook (for address proof)
Matriculation pass certificate for Non ECR
Pan card too for the photo ID…
Are these are sufficient?
I will carry hard copies with me too of all the documents I have.. Just in case..
But I am worried about the police verification. Any ideas when it will take place and the time it takes for the process? Or should the police verification be done prior to the PSK Visit?

The police verification takes place after you submit your application and pay the fee and not before even you do anything. Don’t worry about that. Secondly carry at least 1 set of photocopies self attested with you along with the originals.

Don’t worry this is a routine status, the Granting meant granting at the PSK, then the file goes to the RPO where they scrutinize it and then send it for printing and lamination. Most probably you can expect your passport in next week.

I applied for my passport on 20th April 2012 at Gurgaon PSK. Police verification was done on the 1st of May. From the 2nd of May to the 22nd of May the status was “Police verification under review at Regional Passport Office”.
After that on the 22nd, it changed to ” Police has completed verification on 22nd May. Passport will be mailed once clear PV report reaches passport office”.
Been that way since. Still no clue what’s up.

The passports are dispatched as soon as possible under tatkal scheme. Whether police verification should be done or not is decided upon the documents and the decision of the granting officer. You will find this mentioned in the Acknowledgement letter given to you at the passport seva kendra or the RPO receipt. Is post issue police verification is required just inform the local police station about your absence and they will postpone the report for that period.

was your passport issued on post-issue police verification or no police verification as it was under tatkal scheme. an eight year old police report is sometimes needs review and that solely depends on the passport granting officer. since you have received the passport you can travel with it without any issue. This is basically a defect in the statuses !!! check your acknowledgement receipt whether it requires post or no police verification!!

Why does the status read police verification report has been submitted. How can the government make such a generic status and expect people to wait around.
