My passport validity was about to expire in a couple of months and I was thinking of renewing it sometime soon. Very recently got to know about ‘Passport Seva Kendra’ (PSK) through a friend and decided to use this newly launched facility to renew my passport. All the information was available on their website about the documents, process, fee structure etc., It was indeed a very smooth option to fill out all the form detail online as well as submitting the same through their website. Also, there was an option to schedule the appointment with passport issuing authority online!
To be doubly sure, I called up their toll free helpline 1800-258-1800 to ensure I have the right set of documents and the process followed is correct. Since there was no change in address, I just had to drop in personally at PSK at a pre-scheduled time with current passport which is about to expire. Well, the other documents included the appointment acknowledgement print out and 2 self attested photo copies from the current passport.
I was told explicitly that there is no need to carry photographs as they have set up a digital imaging system to capture photo there itself while processing the form. Also, I was told that the fee for reissue of passport can be paid at the processing counter. All is well until this point.
Rest of the story as it unfolded made me realize the famous saying – “if everything goes smooth without any hurdles, surely you are in wrong lane”. Well, I had the appointment between 1:30pm – 2:15pm at Passport Seva Kendra, Lalbagh road, Bangalore. Reached the premises and got inside the building at 1:00pm upon showing the acknowledgment print out of the appointment. Had to stand in the queue here too to get a token for visiting processing, verification and issual counters. The queue wasn’t moving at all. After an hour one of the official came out and said the servers are down and it may take a while. Later on got to know that the servers were down since 11:30am! Thanks to Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) who have partnered with ministry of external affairs, India to empower the IT systems/infrastructure and to maintain these PSK kiosks.
Again at 2:30pm, one elderly official came to announce that they will switch over to manual mode of passport processing since the servers haven’t been restored and they are not in a position to retrieve the forms that applicants had submitted online. They decided to process those who had filled in forms in hand which weren’t submitted online. Online applicants were told to BUY form (which costs Rs. 10/-) and fill it up, ensure to have passport size photos, then head over to processing counters to get the work done. A fool in me, relying too much on computers had gone there without photos. I had 2 options : Either get the photos and fill up the form all over again manually or visit again some other day hoping to be lucky by then. Since there was a huge crowd and had to attend to work decided for the latter option.
So, this is what I learnt from todays experience:
1. Don’t rely on computer systems at government offices YET!
2. Always carry photographs no matter what whenever you need to fill a form related to govt offices.
3. Carry a pen in the pocket whenever you are out (my parents still shout at me for not complying to this since my college days, there is a bigger story on why don’t like to keep one… may be sometime later!)
4. Expect not to get the work done through govt offices as per the schedule.

To apply for reissue of passport follow the procedure:
1. Get an appointment over internet( http://www.passportindia.gov.in)
2. Go with the following documents:
a) Original Passport
b) address proof ( any two) if your current address is different from the one which is there in the passport.
c)proof of DOB ( SSLC marks card)
d) Degree certificate ( for ECNR)
Above said documents along with ONE set of self attested xerox copies.
e) If you are going TATKAL, “Annexure F” from IPS cadre officer is mandatory.

They wont accept rental aggreement. You can produce your airtel post paid bill. one of this year and one from last year.. For safer side take two lattest bills and two last year bill. If you can change address in bank please change address and ask your bank to give you letter and statement mentioning your present address.

If its 15 yrs then it would have expired by now. You can apply for fresh passport. With your present details( not very much sure). If your born before 1990 you can produce your 10th marks card as your age proof. First collect all details from their call centre then apply for it.

you can try emailing to “helpdesk@passportindia.gov.in” with the details and mention that you have forgot the login Id, and will send you the login id. Then you can reset the password by entering the DOB. I had tried this and they responded back in 3-4 days time. Hope this helps for you.

After reading the comments posted in this blog i was doubly afraid of this passport process. i applied for re-issue of passport (expiry and address change). my passport interview was scheduled for 18 march. the process of 3 people (CSR, Verifying officer and granting officer) verifying the same set of documents got to my nerves.
But anyway i got my passport on 9th april. i still can’t believe it!

I’ve missed the appointment date due to medical problems, how to re-shedule the appointment / get another appointment.

You can just reapply for another appointment. Since your passport has expired already apply through tatkal rather than the normal process. They need a change in address proof only if your address has changed and you can give them ration card or your bank statements also as an address proof

My experience with PSK te re-issue my expired passport was pleasant it was after the submission the nightmare began.
As i had stayed at two addresses in the past one year i gave them both the addresses for verification since both the addresses were on MG road they were a part of the same police station but when the cubbon park police station received my file there was a misprint on the duration of stay in my present address i asked the policeman what is to be done he told me not to worry and these things are common human error and he told that he will give a covering letter with the report my verification was completed by 15th oct and he sent it on 20th oct and still after a month no change in status so i decided to go to the RPO in kormangala was advised by some1 to reach thr by 5-5:30 even though tokens will be given from 9:30 only i reached the RPO by 6:45 and was shocked to see atleast 50 ppl in front of me i waited patiently till 9:30 when i got my token i saw that my number was 58.
I waited for my turn to come and when they called my token number i went ahead and asked the person sitting there about the status he told that one report was adverse and one was clear and he told me to go to room no 27 to the policy section officer.
I had to wait nearly an hour outside his office then he comes and tells me that i have not stayed in m present address for the duration mentioned i explained to him about my case and what the police officer said he told that the police are not authorised to give any covering letter if there is a mistake it should be corrected from their side.
Saying so he said that the present address duration had been changed and PV re-initiated i waited for a week and the same officer called me and told me to come to the police station as my file had arrived but he told me the same thing has come with no corrections the very next day i went to passport office this time i reached at 4 and luckily got token no 8
i submitted a written letter regarding my grievance and the officer assured me that everything would be ok this tym.
As i had to travel to my native place for a month i contacted the police the very next day and explained my case he told to submit all the documents and sign whrevr needed i did all tht a few days later when i am in kolkata i find out that again the report has been sent without any correction.
I returned to blore on 8th jan it was nearly 3 and a half months. i had applied on 27th sept 2010.
I went to the RPO on 11th and they said that i had come there the previous day and re-initiated PV again and they were shouting at me as to why i wanted to re-initiate it again today i asked them to show me the report i then pointed out that even in this report my duration of stay was printed wrong.
Plus luckily i had my flight tkt in my bag itself which i showed to the officer and asked him how is it possible for me to come to the passport office on 7th when i landed in blore airport on 8th nyt, he had no answer then in front of me he corrected it and sent for PV(again,mind u this is only a re-issue case and this PV was initiated only on 15th due to slow server).
This time my verification was clear and the status changed to passport being processed on 25th jan one month gone still there was no change and going to the passport office was tough for me as i am a student and need to miss college evrytym i come here i find out that they have not received my previous address report (just a month back they had it now they dont) they told me to go to the SP office and told me to get the date and serial no i did that still they were unable to find my report after 3 days of searching then i read in the newspaper that a special passport adalat was going to be held on 5th march and files long pending would be cleared i decided to attend it on checkin my status they sent me to the APO who first started saying that i have for my own interest re-initiated PV as when i feel like i kept my cool and explained that the mistake was from your end and not mine he listened but did not look like he cared. He then after tinkering around for an hour on his computer told that nothing can be done without your previous address report i told him sir it is a simple case of re-issue with address change on hearing it was a re-issue he was surprised and said that i had applied for fresh passport i showed him the receipt that i had received from PSK in it was clearly mentioned it is a re-issue he then said then u can have your passport and granted it to me
And after finally waitin from 27th sept 2010 i got my passport today
One thing i learnt from this is never to renew passport from blore again.

I had applied for passport reissue for damaged passport in tatkaal. I have received the passport. But police verification is pending and I had been in US for last 2 years. Police verification has said the date when I landed in India, which is 2 months earlier.
So I am worried whether I can go ahead with my new VISA for stamping or there are chances that My new passport will be cancelled or will have some issues.

I returned to Pune after long stay abroad. Opted to buy Two wheeler for my son, my passport was the only ID I had to show my proof as Indian. I paid cash, but delivery of vehicle was refused. I did not have enough evidence to show, I did shown papers of purchased flat. I got the delivery only after making big noise through the managerial ladder to Marketing chief. Then every thing went smooth. I got my vehicle. To avoid future trouble, I was told to have Ration Card and Land Line Telephone or electricity paid bill, has to be on my name. I went to Ration Card office, was told to meet the officer in-charge. He rejected my passport as JALLI (fraud), because it was issued in Muscat Oman by Indian Embassy. That was my third passport issued in Oman. To make that passport legal he asked for 500 cash. I asked an agent moving around in that office, I paid him 150, same evening the agent brought official Ration Card in my house. Till today I never used that card for any thing, because as per new ID proof requirements, I must have present operating Bank book with my photo attested by the bank manager plus new driving license. To get my renewed DL, the lady asked the proof that I am alive from a doctor, I paid 25 to an old man sitting in the premises with official badge as Doctor. All this reminds me the sentence of late Swami Chinmayanand “one must offer the prashad to every Devata to get your work done in the religious(?) modern India.”

I am from Bangalore. I have a worser experience to dwelt upon. My passport got expired on 8th Jan 2008. I was a college goer then, and did not bother to re issue it. Three years went by, I finally applied for it on 12 Jan 2011. Waiting for passport. But, the catch here s that, I am staying in Marathalli, Bangalore. In my application, I mentioned my nearest police station as WHITEFIELD police station. But, But, But.. few days ago, I came to know that the nearest station is HAL one and NOT whitefield. So, I dont know what will happen. It would be great and will be a god cum human if someone resolves this paradox for me.

I belong to electronic city police station but my passport went to madiwala police station (And i wasn’t even aware of that fact and thus I had to visit 2 other police stations as well). Anyway , going to the police station and stating the urgency with mellow voice worked for me and do i really need to mention the inevitable ‘money for buying sweets’ part? Any normal human being is bound to develop diabetes if he devours sweet worth of that much currency and that too in a daily basis.
So, don’t worry . Go talk to Whitefield PS. But chances are that your verification details are not even sent there !

If you don’t want to waste your time then go to HAL police station. Tell the constable that you want the passport urgently. I am sure she will ask for Rs500, but you can get it done in Rs300. I had a similar experience with HAL police. My file never reached HAL police station although in my passport application I had mentioned that HAL police station is the nearest station.

Hi All – I applied for the renewal of my passport on 30th Nov 2010 at the PSK centre in Chandigarh. Initial process was smooth; no hazzles if your documents are in order. In my case of renewal of a near expiring passport, I found that PSK people laid focus and emphasis on the address proofs being submitted. I had submitted my landline bill, rent deed and my private bank account statements (donwloaded from internet). They do not accept the private bank statements – if you have a nationalized bank account, get that statement.
The police verification was initiated on 17th December (17 days after applying) and this was completed on 19th December. The status on the website updated to “you will receive an SMS or email once the passport is dispatched” on 26th December. Today is 21st Jan 2011 and still the same status is shown. I called the PSK helpline number and they tell me that the passport is at the printing/lamination and quality check. I have lodged a complaint with them of not receiving the passport in time. Despite following up on this complaint time and again, nothing has happened. I am still waiting for the passport and now getting worried as I have to fly on 5th Feb 2011. Can someone help?

Yes, I got my passport last week on Thursday. The passport office is too slow – trust me on that. I visited them thrice to determine the status and every time they mentioned the same thing. I had almost given up the hope; Fortunately, I received it on Thursday last.

I dont remember exact no. of days, but definitely 20+ cal days. Archana, I suggest you to go Regional Passport Office, kormangala and check ….you will get the delay reason .. but you may have to spend half of your day or more than that in RPO. since there are 350 tokens will be issued and only 2/3 available counters. The funniest part is i went there on same day to check my status when my passport got dispatched 🙂

I applied for passport two months ago. And till date my status is says “You would receive an sms/email once the passport is dispatched.” NB, Gitanjali have you guys received your passport yet?

Finally I got my passport yesterday .. after approximately 2 months of waiting 🙂 … When your passport is dispatched they will change the status and send in the new passport number and speed post tracking number in the status.

But PSK service is pathetic. I applied on 6th of Oct and I got it on 22nd Dec. i.e more than 2 and a half months for processing passport under normal scheme.

Police verification is there for Reissue of passport?

After loads of reading up and preparation finally went today for reissuance of my passport under Tatkal as I need to travel the coming week. I had Annexure-I and 3 of the 15 documents of which one was the sale deed. I was not allowed unless I had one of the documents mentioned in the list from a to i having the current address. At the first counter, I was told that Annexure-I and property documents were not required since I had a police clearance on my earlier passport. But the long wait and all the mess I was in, I was clueless as to which documents were scanned and which werent. While I waited for my turn for the GO, I asked me for the ‘Tatkal’ document . I was so nervous that I just showed her I had the documents. She asked me if it was scanned and I said maybe it was. On receiving the acknowledgement at the exit door I realized Annexure-I was not scanned. And now I am losing sleep over what she meant by a ‘Tatkal’ document. I am so worried..not sure if I should visit the PSK again tomorrow as I cannot afford to lose time for them not having collected the documents that I already had..!! Can anybody help me please? Any idea/suggestion?

Went and checked at the PSK today….they said the passport was already printed and did not collect any documents from me….just got my fingers crossed. Hoping they would dispatch it today since it is in Tatkal.

Go to the website[+]
Create a login/account. Once logged in, create an application with relevant details (New, Reissue etc). If there are additions to the existing passport (like adding spouse name, change of address etc), click on the appropriate button and proceed. You can save the online application and edit any time you please (after logging in, of course).
Supporting documents can be uplaoded online (after scanning) or copies submitted (please carry originals!). For most copies self-attestation is fine. Please read the instructions section for documents for your particular case.
Once you are satisfied that the application is complete, submit the application. Once submitted, you cannot edit the application!
Only submitted applications are eligible for appointments. Click on schedule appointment, check available and convenient dates and select a slot.
Take a print out of the appointment schedule ONLY!
No need to print application. If you cannot print, at least note down the application number and appointment date/time.
On the day of appointment, get to the office half an hour early. Show the gate keeper the appointment and he’ll make you stand in an appropriate queue.
Upon entering, a few people will help you in arranging the supporting documents: basically a scrutiny. If something is missing or not relevant, you will not be allowed to proceed. You can get the relevant document and return later.
After the initial scan, go to the computer deska dn get your queue slip and that’s it!
The people are most helpful and with a proper set of documents, you should have little trouble.
I had an appointment on 29th Sep, 2010. I got the passport this morning! They even send and SMS to your given mobile phone the details of Speed Post Tracking number as well!

In this point i really want to thank Mr. Mohan for bringing this blog. Many times i realized these govt office service and other govt service are worst because we don’t have proper information about it. With E-governance things are changing and its our responsibility to educate non IT people also to take advantage of this system. I know people will say i don’t know anything about computer. But let me tell every one, Computer and IT is not at all rocket science. Its very simple and user friendly it just need some time to understand.

I am very thankfull to you for your kind concern and consoling words. Good news to share as yesterday around 6 pm got msg from passport office as our parents passport is dispatched, which included the passport and speed post tracking numbers. Immediately i cald to the jayanagar post office to track the speed post and they said as still it didnt reach them and expected time of delivery is on friday morning. I kept my mind cool n thought to fwd the passport status msgs [sent by passport office] to the travel agency. Upon delivery of message,travel agency ppl cald me n told to bring passports to their office by friday morning instantly after we receive it. Today at 9, i cald to postoffice again n d post man told as its in his hands and will deliver by 9.30. Around at 10 am he delivered passports and finally i got the smile on my face after looking at the passports. the passports were like oasis in the desert for me. Immediately dialed to the travel agency n updated them n now following up with them. Now things are set. our parents hajj tour is confirmed. Thanks a ton to praveen. Tomorrow would share my learning’s with all as its my responsibility now to help others on passport system, who are not actually aware of..

I am also facing same issue. As I need to fly on 15th of OCt.Still I am waiting for my passport. I also visited PP office on 7th and some how I was able to convince PRO my urgency and she told your pP will print today and u will get next week. Again on 8th i visited PP office to check current status as per counter 7 PP was printed and I got my PP# too they told that pp will be dispatched today but when i checked with local post office yesterday It was not.
Now I am not sure what to do next I m plannig to re visit PP office on Monday morning to see where is my passport.
I hope it will be dispatched on Monday and I will get on Tuesday.

If you are the applicant then you will hav the option to collect in person in counter no. 7. Everyday after 3.30 pm they will deliver the passports to the applicants hand who r with urgency but prior to that APO has to approve ur passport application by listening to the urgency. It will be gud if u can visit again on monday and request APO to deliver the same day to you by hand at counter no. 10. Dont worry Gaurav as you will definitely get your passport by tomorrow. They are reluctant in responding to public and will do the work for sure. Keep checking the status in interenet and once the status is changed then call ur local post office with the speed tracking number to track n collect it.

To update the status of my parents passport…as i said yest, i been to RPO bangalore office today at 8 am. was worried initially after seeing the long queue as heard like ppl were standing in the queue for token issue from morning 5. at 9.30, dey started issuing the enquiry tokens. mine was 218 n inside it was fully crowded with ppl. at ground floor, my turn came at 11.50 and updated them the staus as its in rpo office for printing / lamination but is not dispatched yet and explained them the urgency n requested to kindly help me in getting my parents passport today. he didnt care to listen to me as he was on phone almost al d time. he spoke a word with great difficulty as to go to 1st floor and counter no.11 for further proceedings. i immediately rushed to 1st floor and again a big queue waiting there.my turn came at 1 pm and a lady by name chacko was there, who works like a pentinum 1 system. All of her actions are in slow motion n shez like dont care to the world n working as if shez not paid by govt for her work. i kept my mind cool for her arrogance, reckless replies. I explained her the urgency n showed her the proof of urgency, detailed request letter, enclosed with receipts and travell bills. Finally she agreed to dispatch the passport today. i requested her to provide the option for collecting it from the rpo counter but she didnt care to listen to me n had a serious look at me n told u can go now n told as passport will be dispatched today to my residential address. Well..in the end..things worked out inspite of a tough time. as from 8 till 1.15 i was at passport office for more than 4 hours. Now hoping for the passport to be dispatched soon as travel agency has given a deadline of today evening. if it doesnt come then all my efforts will go in vain. requesting you all to please pray for my parents passport as they hav intended to offer holy hajj. I saw your yesterdays post and today’s post. Yest i haven’t had any word also to make you comfortable. I hope you would have read the complete story of ours and how we got passport. Now its good that you met some person who told it will be dispatched. There are similar cases in this blog.
What i suggest is wait today if not delivered buy time from your travel agency till tomorrow morning and go to RPO as soon as possible and ask them to give passport rit away cos already you have waited today. If possible take your parents along with you ,in case if they say they will give passport only to recipients then it will be problem without your parents there.
Before visiting god , He keeps all these tests. Finally everything will be fine. Don’t worry. Your parents will have very safe and happy haj.

Yest passport was not dispatched as assured by APO, bangalore. I been to RPO, koramangala even today and they hav the same words even today as passport will be dispatched today.. i dont have any hope as it will be dispatched today. m wit immense pressure as the travel agent is calling every hour n asking for the passport status. m loosing my cool n frustrated with this govt organizations. They are working like tortoise n moreover received blasting from APO today as in the request letter, the File No. was mentioned very small, instead has to be very big. M very upset as they r not able to keep their words n still the passport is not delivered. Still the status in the website is “You will receive sms/email once the passport is dispatched”. I heard from the call center reps as if they really have dispatched the passport then the status will be changed and the new status will include passport number including speed post tracking number. I dont know why are they not realizing the urgency. if i keep explaining, they dont hav patience to listen to me even. either they will b on phone r they dont care to respond. Travel agency ppl hav given todays time after requesting a lot. now i dont think they are going to listen anymore if today again we fail to get the passport. Please pray for us and thanks a lot to you praveen as your words has consoled me a lot. My parents have applied for passport on 8th of september. its nearing a month n currently the status is as “you will receive sms/email once the passport will be dispatched”. i was tracking all over the process. To help all, m sharing the experience of my parents for getting the passport. My parents are wishing to go holy hajj tour n paid nearly 2 lakhs to travel agency in assumption as we have more than a month to get the passport. First step of getting the passport is applying online for getting the prior appointment. We tried on 1st of septmeber and got the appointment for 8th. My mom was not having valid documents as address proof. Things were messed up as cal center reps were telling as husbands documents can serve the purpose for wife but wen enquired in enquiry counter, dey were sounding diff as we have to hav valid address document. Struggled a lot to get Residence certificate from tahsildar but cudnt get as we didnt had sufficient time. finally been to psk, lalbagh and were tensed as my mothers appln will b rejected due to lack of address proof. luckily the process went very smooth n none of the officers pointed r rejected. dey were polite n dey confirmed as husbands documents can b submitted for wife. juz in half n hour d passport applying process completed n came out wit a deep n relaxed breath. den started the hunt. gave a gap of 2 weeks, went to local police station for 4 times asking for the file has come r not. the writer in police station was demanding money to come n visit my place. i paid bribe as i had no other go as if d passport gets delayed, hajj tour of my parents will b cancelled. writer visited my place, had snacks, juice, took bribe n happily went back by telling us to come to police station after 2 days wit originals as police inspector will be verifying al d documents. we went to police station d day he told us to come. unfortunately inspector was on leave for 2 days due to which again der been a delay of 2 days. den finally caught hold of police inspector. managed to get the originals verification done d same day n requested inspector to plz speedup the process. He was very prompt n ideal n understood our urgency n ordered the writer to send the file immediately to sp office for clearance. Then again writer started making stuffs, which i understood n told him as will pay for the immediate processing to sp office. he said as even in sp office he need to pay to others n demanded lil high for which i had to bend again. He was like a dog, dying for money but overall helped us to immediately get the file processing done from SP office. on 1st of october, the file was sent to passport office n d status was showing “you will receive sms/email once the passport will be dispatched”. Customer care reps told as it will take 3 working days to get the passport printing / lamination done..waited for these many days but no progress and the travel agency ppl started pressurizing as if we dont get passport in 2 days, my parents hajj tour will be cancelled. After listening to them, m more tensed as all the efforts , bribe , applying butter to the police will go invain as i had been with horrible time since a month. Now got to know from this blog n cal center as we can approach passport office sitting at rpo, bangalore to speedup the things by showing the proof of urgency. we have to get passport at any cost in a day or two..else all the efforts will go invain..request all to please pray for my parents passport as they are intended to go for holy trip. Anyone please suggest as any other way r approach in speeding up the process. need passport at any cost in a day r two.

I was in a similar urgency and i decided to visit RPO for the same.
Go to RPO office very early in the morning because there is a queue ( My experience is for Bangalore).
Once you get permission to go inside Regional passport office instead of sitting in the queue inside directly go to Regional passport office chamber and wait outside to meet him/her. Once you get a chance to meet explain the urgency. You can get your passport delivered on the same day at the counter if passport officer is kind enough to accept your urgency. He has the power. I got my wife’s passport delivered on counter same day in the afternoon.

Hi, I want to get the passport for my 10month old son. I assume it will be under the minor category only. But the only problem I face while filling the form is, if the present address stay is less than 1 year, they ask for previous address and in the PDF unless I fill the prev address it does not go further. What do I do now? My son is just 10 months old and its asking. Any clue on how to fill the form?

If you get a response to your query, please do share. I managed to get my passport created but I am fully aware of the hassles for minors – I am planning to go via tatkal route; am collecting some more information.
On the PSK site, if you enter the details for the minors, there seems to be a glitch in the system somewhere. It does not allow me to go any further from step 2. So I’ll use the passport agents’ services now and post my results here.
