At some point of time most you would have got irritated on facebook because of so many quizzes and other application messages cluttering your wall. No second thought that it is annoyingly ridiculous to see so many messages which *may* be of no importance to you. If you are a victim of such a scenario, here is a quick solution to reclaim your facebook wall. If you don’t use facebook, this post is not for you, consider reading any other post on this blog :). This will hide the messages from games too like ‘FarmVille‘, which I mentioned in previous post.
In order to block quizzes and other application messages the first and the foremost requirement is to use FireFox browser. I am sorry, but Internet Explorer doesn’t support this trick.
- If you don’t have FireFox browser, go get it now.
- Install GreaseMonkey add-on to your FireFox browser.
- Install the Facebook Purity GreaseMonkey script
All the installations are pretty straight forward and self explanatory as you click on those links. Once all the 3 steps mentioned above are done, now go and visit your facebook wall on firefox and all those annoying quizzes and other application messages are hidden! If you are very curious and want to know whats happening with those quizzes from your friends, just click on the ‘Show’ link as shown in the image. That brings up all those blocked messages, which you can hide upon a click again.
I am not sure if something similar exists for other browsers. As and when I get to know, you will find an update here π

i keep messing around and making all kinds of innovations, on almost everything related to my computer. When you manage to do something successfully, it gives you such a boost of ‘high’ doesn’t it π

How on earth did you figure this out? (I’m quite an illiterate in the tech world so I ask).. π
I use IE but I shall keep your post & tips at the back of mind when I switch to Firefox. My colleague keeps clicking on the ‘Hide’ option all morning. I think he’s gonna find your post a lifesaver. Thanks Mohan.
Mohan says
No big deal in this. This is the power of open source community π
I have been using greasemonkey for changing the way a page looks on firefox and I am glad someone wrote this simple code for facebook apps!
Firefox is anytime better than IE as far as my knowledge goes. I think it is high time for you to shift over π

Sweet, I was looking for something like this and I got freedom on facebook π
Thanks for sharing this info Mohan.

For IE, there is one way to hide applications by clicking on such quiz or application message. There the problem is you have to do it for each and every application one at a time. I like this FB Purity thingy.
Mohan says
Thats right. There is an issue here if I am not wrong. Once blocked, the messages aren’t that easy to switch from ‘show’ and ‘hide’ in case if some of the quizzes interests to kill your free time π
Shrinidhi Hande says
Isn’t it an irony you’re using an application to block other applications?
Mohan says
Apparently, FB purity is not a facebook application π It is a greasemonkey script from GNU community.
