Fiat India has introduced its new model Linea in three variants – Active, Dynamic and Emotion. All these variants come in 1.3 ltr diesel and 1.4 ltr petrol engines. I test drove this car almost a week back and couldn’t manage to write a review. After my initial reviews on Tata Indica vista, Maruti A-Star and Hyundai i20, here is my much delayed review on Fiat Linea.
Looks: I went to Bangalore Concorde Motors show room on Hosur road near dairy circle. This show room was the authorized showroom for Tata Motors until Fiat announced sales and after sales service tie up with Tatas. There were Fiat Linea Dynamic and Emotion models for display. No second thought on its looks. The Fiat linea commercial lives up to its tag line of “Admiration Guaranteed“. I really liked the board styling, buttons & switches design/quality, steering design, seats comfort – these will certainly grab anyone’s attention. On the exteriors – twin barrel head lights, rear lamps and the stylish front grill will get your eyeballs rolling. However, I am not much impressed with the quality of plastics in this car too. They are just very ordinary. Other than that features like climate control a/c, integrated stereo with controls on steering wheel and USB dock are awesome.Β Multifunction display, instantatious milage Info, ABS (only on high end models), alloy wheels, blue βnβ me software, rake adjustable steering wheel etc., are the other features you should check out in these cars.
Test Drive and Engine performance: Diesel variant of Linea Dynamic was the vehicle allocated for my test drive. Steering rake is adjustable and I don’t understand the logic behind having ignition key going vertically down. Slight noise of the engine was audible from inside, I would say it is much better shielded compared to other diesel engines. So I assume petrol version would hardly have any engine sound. There were 4 of us in the vehicle including a showroom guy. I am not impressed with its initial pick up, for a diesel engine of 1.3 ltr I expected much better performance. Another fact that let me down was the gear shift. It wasn’t smooth like I had experienced in Tata Indica Vista. May be it is a bit harder since the car was very new and had done only about 680kms or may be that the car is looking forward for its first service. After reaching a speed of about 40kms+ the engine was responding well on the Banneraghatta road. I could drive for a very short distance at this speed under dairy circle fly over. I found the breaking to be pretty good as well. If this slow pick is a genuine issue, then this car wouldn’t be a good option for city drive. Atleast in cities like Bangalore for the kind of road traffic, this will be a big minus. I would suggest readers to test drive the car and get satisfied yourself before arriving at any conclusion.
Mileage, colors and Pricing : Buyer has an option to select from 4 colors. The petrol variants are available with a starting ex-showroom price range of 6 lakhs to 7 lakhs while the diesel variants cost from 6.9lakhs to 8.1 lakhs. Road tax and other charges will go upto a minimum of another lakh for each of these. You can check out the exact price from Fiats official site. You can refer to that site for more information on technical specs and all other info. Salesman was skeptical on exact mileage, he told the petrol car will yield anywhere between 10-14 kmpl for petrol engine while 14-17kmpl for diesel engine. No specific numbers on mileage, appreciate if any of the readers can feed in that info.
So, the verdict is that it is a good looking car with lot of attractions wrt interior and exterior. Certainly it lives upto its caption of Admiration guaranteed, but the concern in over the performance and after sales service. Though Fiat has tied up with Tata’s, I doubt if they will be able to deliver an efficient service model like Maruti. You may want to consider similar players in the industry like Honda City, Ford Fiesta and Swift Dzire.

Using fiat linea emotion pack (diesel) for last 7 months, 12000km done as of date, first service only at 15000km, average mileage 18km/L, reached max speed at 165km on Pune Kolhapur highway, suspensions are good, 500km driving at a stretch does not tire you unlike other cars, service interval is 15000km, acceleration is satisfactory, easily reaches 120km speed, Blue and Me and audio system is good, steering angle change, seat height adjustment, driving is now a pleasure, any other information?

Shri,
i heard of many stories on Linea diesel Good & Bad when i test drove it 4 times in heavy /Mumbai traffic i did not find any pick up issue. it is a great pack for the offer. what you say
Arindam Dasgupta says
Hi All,
Just completed 3 weeks and 1000 kms on my new Linea Emotion Pk. Its a beauty all the way. The build quality is excellent and you can barely feel the numerous potholes on Mumbai roads. When you start the car, you cannot make out at all as the engine is almost silent. Have done almost 3 full tanks and the mileage seems is slowly rising from 8.5 to about 9.5 that I am getting now. Expect this to shoot up after the first service. Have read a lot about the AC not being good but I have had no problems at all. In fact if you set the climate control to LO (16 Degrees) you ll need woolens to feel comfortable inside. The initial pick up may not be great but at higher gears it races. As far as Mumbai city is concerned, one can overlook this aspect ( the low pick up). As far as looks and features are concerned it will give Honda City a run for its money. Overall a top class car at an affordable price.

should i buy linea ? as now i m driving swift…. and i m confused between linea and verna
please guide i m in mumbai.. and my running is 3500 km per year , so which is best for my running

Hi Mihir, I have test driven Fiat linea and what you read above is my review of that car. Though I have driven Verna, haven’t really driven with the intent of reviewing it. So, it would be tough for me to suggest between linea and verna. Please go ahead and test drive both of them, you will be able to make up your mind.

Hi,,

1)ford fiesta 1.6 EXi..(petrol)
2)hyundai verna VTVT 1.6..(petrol)
3)fiat linea active 1.4…(petrol)
al dese cars fit into my budget……
i waz already in a fix bcoz of Fiesta vs Verna battle when i saw linea.
I’m stuck to it since i saw it..
In terms of looks ,linea’s got no comparison…..but in terms of mileage,aftersales service and power i vud like to kno vich 1’s best…(basically city driving)…..can anyone suggest me anything???
Navneeth M Shenoy says
is there any update on linea 1.6 milti jet engine? is it coming any time soon? heard rumours that fiat is is testing this car?
Superlifer says
Folks,
One point to highlight . I also got simply hooked to Fiat Linea’s design and its interior / exterior looks and is indeed fantastic. So I thought let me check with my collegues in UK about FIAT sales in the country and they mentioned that you won’t see much of them in UK which is true. The reason behind this is that Fiat body gets corroded after couple of years along with other parts. That’s the reason people perhaps don’t go for this car although engine may give performance.I am not sure how far it is true , but may be worth noting as in UK you will find only Fords or Renaults and BMWs . We really don’t know how the condition of the body will be after three / four year down the line since it has been recently launched in India. So I have taken back step now and since its price is cheap , I doubt the looks will last that long. I have finally decided to go for the performer – The ultimate Mitsubishi Cedia New sports……Worth spending few more lakhs rather than regret after couple of years…

Thanks for the reply, but Verna is a bit out of my budget with a cost of 8.61 L (on road) in Pune.
G Srivastava says
Hi There,
I have been driving a linea emotions deisel for the last 4 months now, i didnβt any complaints wat so ever, it has been giving me a mileage of 15/16 in City Pune and 23/24 on highways, Its simple awesome.
Nothing that i heard of but they would surely come up with it, in time to come,
There will no issue to buy a linea i am using the same version as u planning to by for the last 4 months
If you compare verna with linea the verna doesn’t give the feature which comes with linea, i was abt to pickup a verna in March but when i test drove the linea, that is what i picedup, i have been driving it since last 4 months with couple of trip outside Pune and daily in Pune, excellent mileage on the highway as well as city, good comfort and nicely priced, the engine is very dependable with a high torque which ehlps the car to move slowly, try driving on abad road, it will just cruze with no major jerks on the driving. I am also planning to buy a Punto as well, Fiat is finally back with a bang
Vaibhav says
Hi there!
I am planning to buy my first car. I have a choice of buying a family car OR a sedan. I was comparing amongst FIAT Palio and Maruti Suzuki WagonR, and FIAT Linea and Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire.
Since there still exist varied reports about linea in
1. Gearbox smoothness
2. Mileage (D)
3. Pick-up
4. Spare part and servicing costs
5. Service availability,
I am in a real fix whether to go for a FIAT or a Maruti Suzuki.
It would be of great help if anyone could help me reach a verdict.
Kindly bring to focus any points not mentioned in any of the above discussions to take his/her point home. (Experienced drivers are most welcome, since I do not have ANY car driving experience of any kind.)
Also, I am a bit skeptical about the price tags, since the top variant of Linea(D) in my city (Pune) costs 8.26 L, while Dzire (on road price) does not exceed 7.53 L!
Any and all comments/criticisms welcome! π
P.S. : The soft facilities (e.g. My Blue and Display information etc.) make this car stand apart among all the ‘7-8 Lac price tag’ sedans. They are a reason to cheer I must say! π

LINEA Phreak says
Finally…Today I got a chance to drive FIAT LINEA EMOTION Petrol Version (Bangalore). Here are some of the observations
1. Pick up of the car very poor (compare to Swift, HONDA). I am aware that those cars have different BHP’s. Still never seen such a bad pick up. – Showroom guy claims that it depends upon tuning of the car which can be done later.
2. AC – Car AC reported badly on every blog and experience the same. Doesn’t work at all. You will realize after 30 min that AC is ON.-Showroom guy claims that this car AC might be a problem due to some reason but doesnt have problem with other LINEA cars.
3. When you raise/accelerate the car and change gear, car doesn’t really respond to the engine RPM. It takes lot of time to adjust with the acceleration. Which causes lot of fuel consumption.
4. Beauty & Look wise car is superb.
5. Economy of Fuel always depends upon driver, roads, traffic condition in India and that is the only way to find real economy of any car.
6. Gear shifting is smooth but as a power steering, FIAT needs to improve a lot specific to LINEA.
Conclusion:
– FIAT PALIO is the best ever model released by FIAT
– Not buying FIAT LINEA
Pallav Shah says
Hi i just want to know that is it really a worth buying car? cause i found a little bit problem when the engine get starts and little bit noisy even the car stops but i looked it’s interior & exterior looks much and one more doubt i have that does this car really have good resale value because it is assoicated with the brand name Tata and i feel that this car is not looking in the market as much as the other cars. Can somebody please answer my questions?

i test drove d beauty linea the other day and found it gud though it is not a beast in its power but other features and looks it provides are no less than the skodas and i think it will turn into good family car.
my experience with sales manager of fiat was also very good.
the car simply cruised in 3rd and the 4th gear…

I am owning a Linea. It is an excellent machine, gives great driving pleasure. Please do not believe any unrealiable story about Linea. If anybody would like to buy Linea please visit the nearest showroom and have a test drive. You will be definitely impressed with the performance. Before this I had a Year 2001 model Palio. I am quite impressed with the performance of Palio and wanted to upgrade my car to Linea. One thing is for sure, Fiat users will like to drive Fiat only. It has an excellent built quality, it is safe to drive and you will defenitely like it.

I suggest you talk to a different sales guy and have a test drive appointment scheduled before you reach out to them personally. This in many ways helpful… if you can recollect your experience, you would known what I mean π
pankaj says
I own a linea top model fully loaded version.
lot of problems:
1. air conditioner does not work effectively, you feel like sitting in front of a cooler not an AC
2. the mileage is 5-8kmpl. i have decent driving skills. i drive an maruti esteem as well as get 14kmpl out of that.
3. finishing of the car is not good – you will find many loose ends, especially in the bonnet
4. service centre is pathetic. just visit them once and see for yourself – no one to attend to the customer. no delivery on time (it takes 2 days for them to service, you give the car today and get it tomorrow!!)
best part is, my car is only 20days old and these are the set of problems i face… imaging the older ones π
btw, you can test drive one vehicle which is old and you will notice the gear box is not smooth at all.

I have not faced even a single problem abt LInea … Other than reading one such insane guys forum posting ……ROFL
Let me tell you my father owns Ford Fiesta and Honda city ….I personally hate ford fiesta ..It’s a cramped car ( Ford has only four letter words from me —- off )… Honda city maintenance is really expensive . My father spends around 25000 per service .Spending 50,000 Rs a yr for a HONDA …. Eeeeks … My father is selling his Honda car … going for Fiat linea soon π …I happy that …..

This Pankaj doesn’t know what he is talking about I feel. My Linea E PACK Petrol has done more than 7000 km; the Climate Control when on (LO)chills you to the bone in less than 2 min even when the outside temp is > 45 degrees celsius. The mileage I get (tankful to empty) is 10.5 in the city and 15.2 kmpl on highway (speeds < 100 kmpl) (however, the MFD shows 11.8 & 16.9 respectively), grip and stability at speeds upto 170 kmpl is fantastic; 0-100 kmph time of 14 sec (my Alto takes 21 sec & my cousin's new Honda City takes 11 sec) is good; ASS (after sales service) at Joshi autozone has been great so far, I am ecstatic about the car and this when I have bought it after 3 months of test driving the new City, the Verna and the Linea at various dealerships across CHD and Punjab. Love to all.

Its been over a year and 14000 Km with my Linea Petrol.. The Air-conditioning is not up to the mark, it works brilliantly in the winters!! and during cloudy days and in the nights. But if the car is parked in the sun, the plastic absorbs ALL the possible heat and hence takes forever fot the vehicle to cool down.
Underpowered – not really, you need to get used to driving the car. Otherwise its a complete package and a brilliant machine to have.
Rohan Sukhatankar says
Hi Guys
I test drove the Linea a few days back the Petrol variant few observations
Positives
1) Great Looks
2) Nice features
3) The blue and me technology is a nice feature to have, you can talk and read messages while driving.
4) Tie up with Tata’s will ensure good after sales service
Negatives
1) The vehicle is extremely underpowered
2) Clutch is hard, gear shift becomes a problem
3) The guy who got the vehicle was unsure of the mileage
4) The display screen reading is a problem as the steering blocks the view, so blu and me would be a task to read.
Over all i wouldn’t go for the vehicle
1) The vehicle underpowered

Worst experience with FIAT dealer specific in Bangalore i.e Prerana Motors. First of all, I would like to share my experience with you all. I have inquired about the car but not of the sales folks has given the brief. Then asked for test drive but non of the folks are arranging it. They claims that this/that model is NOT available at this time etc etc. I would like to pursue this car but because of this mentality of the dealer, bit scared to buy. I am going to try another dealer i.e CONCORDE Motors.
Once again I repeat
1. PRERANA MOTORS in Bangalore doesnt have professional skills & people to deal with customer
2. They over commit to the customer.
3. Phathetic Service overall.

@abhishek
I can’t agree more than what you are saying abhishek. Many of the readers are mailing me with their positive feed back on this car π
abhishek says
people still dont know well enough that… an engines size doesnt matter that much…. what matters mostly is how much power the car has and how much torque its engine produces.. no matter how small the engine is…. The Linea has a 1.3Ltr engine but it produces 86 ps and a torque of 203 nm which is as much as of that of Skoda Octavia(90 ps and 210nm)… and mileage of Linea is simply awesome… it gives around 19.6 kmpl in highway… 14.9 kmpl in the city…in combine 15.9 kmpl….This is an Overdrive magazine resource…..and what else at a price of 6 to 8 lakh you get such an awesome car… its the Car of the year 2009 and Midsize Car of the year 2009….

Thanks for being regular ans sharing your views on Fiat Linea engine performance. Good to hear that the service for Fiat Linea is good. Would you mind commenting on the mileage of Linea Emotion?
GIGI says
Linea shows very good perfomarnce and even in the speed of 140KM/hr the vehicles was steady without any noises . Like any other diesel Engine once the speed get reduced and if we want to increase further we have to down the gear and gain the speed back again else it will take time or may face difficulty while overtaking.
Regarding services from concorde motors it is very good and since it ia new vehicle service engineers are also new to Linea but they got confidence in sorting out the issues if any.

the emotion variant is awsum and itz price is also reasonabl.. it has so many amazing features..
i am going to buy linea emotion diesel…
jst wanted to knw from gigi abt the performance… is it consistant?? and plz let me knw the feedback regarding services if anyone has gone thru it… thnkz
Jaikishan says
I still cant believe that Gigi is getting 24 kmpl for Linea Emotion, diesel. If this is truly the case, then every other car would be back in the race. Why I m saying so is,in today’s credit crunch people would like to go for a car that gives mileage & other features are secondary, well not for everyone, but in general.
But overall the Linea has got on to a good start and has a long innings to play, the competition would surely be tough as new more models are coming out. They should come out with the 1.6v Diesel at the earliest as the lack of power is the only main drawback that I came across on all the review of Fiat Linea.
Mohan says
@Ramesh Sundararajan

@Sateesh
Makes sense. Thanks for your inputs.
@manish
You have discounted the mileages here. Diesel engines give better mileage compared to petrol engine in the car segment. If the petrol cars deliver a mileage of about 60 miles per gallon (mpg), then the diesel counterpart will deliver nearly about 70-80 mpg. On a long distance drive and long routes, diesel cars are much preferred over petrol variants. So, it again boils down to your usage.
manish says
i have homed onto top variant of linea..
but i m not able to make up my mind..
should i take the petrol or go ahead with diesel..your advice would be solicited ..
manish says
sir
i m referring to swift in particular.. and verna and vista in general.. the cost between the same diesel(of course fixed geometry turbine) and petrol is around 50 to 60 grands.. even considering the fuel prices and general driving condition.. i think shelling out 1 lakh is a bit too much.. diesel engine return around 2 rs to km while petrol costing 4 for the same.. effectively you save around 2 rs forevery km u drive.. ignoring the fact that diesel is more noisy and servicing and spares are costly..u still need to drive around 50,000 km to break even for the extra price you pay..
Sateesh says
The Car will give 25 KMPL on the highway with speeds within 110 Kmph. This engine has a VGT and all cars that are only 50,000 more than the Petrol version do not have a VGT. There is a difference. You are paying for VGT and Fiat first hand technology.

Thanks for the info.
@GIGI
Wow.. 24kmpl is a great mileage! Could you be more specific on which version on Linea you are talking about?
GIGI says
From Jan 24th I am using Fiat Linea and I am getting a mileage of 24 KM on Highway with A/C and 5 passengers when external temperature is 25 degree. I am getting 19 KM when external temperature is between 25 to 35 degrees. And on City driving I am getting 13 KM. Overall average (50% city and 50 % Highway) I am getting 15 KM.
Sandeep says
Hello to the Author,
Couple of inputs, it is exactly the same engine as the swift dezire or Indica Vista only that it carries an additional VGT (Variable Geometry Turbo) – features in Verna also… You have a good torque which really matters. And mileage, this car delivers about 18kmpl.
Regards,
Sandeep

@Jayanth
How was your test drive? Like to share any thoughts?
@manish
It is always true when it comes to pricing between petrol and diesel variants. The diesel engine vehicles will cost more and I don’t think it is very highly priced. I feel shelling out another 1 lakh on diesel engine is worth because of its mileage and fuel price in india π
manish says
its a pretty nice car..amazing looks and interiors but i just wanna know if it is worth paying 1 lakh extra for diesel model???either the petrol engine is too screwed up..or they are overestimating their diesel..all other cars using same multijet charge arnd 50grands extra..with 1 lakh u will have to drive around 40 to 50 thousand Km to break even..is it really worth it??
Jayanth says
Thanks 4 the details. I am going 4 test drive tomorrow.

@Suhail
Well, nobody is commenting on the actual mileage of Fiat linea. Need to wait for some more time to get the facts from customers!
@Ruchi
Thanks π
@Shwet
We can’t really compare 1.3lts engine with 2L for sure! well, for the given engine capacity obviously, it is a thumbs down on performance in sedan class.
Shwet says
“I am not impressed with its initial pick up, for a diesel engine of 1.3 ltr I expected much better performance.”
isn’t 1.3Ltr engine is one of the smallest in deisel…in 99/2000, Lancer had 2L engine which produced mere 68bhp….phew…
Kartik says
1.3 ltr engine equipped in the fiat is adequate for city driving. in any case having pickup any higher than this would not mean much in city driving.
Ruchi says
Hey Nice review , i was not aware about Fiat Linea in this detail..
Suhail says
Hi Mohan. Nice review on this car. Fiat is known for having very smooth gear shift mechanism. It was boasted that Fiat linea will give a mileage upto 24 kms. so, it is all hoax?
jassi says
not exact 24 kms mileage but i think abt 18 km in diesel model… not bad
sabbar says
in diesel it just 15kms mileage
kartik says
after the initial run in (1500-2000kms) the linea-diesel consistently delivers 18-19 kms/litre.
Jaikishan KV says
No Suhail. Not at all hoax. I have clocked 25.5 kmpl without AC and 22.3 kmpl with a/c just recently in May when I drover from Trichur (Kerala) to Chennai. I checked by filling up the tank completely, Tank to tank method. On highways you are sure to get above 21 kmpl for any diesel linea, no doubt. It definitely depends on the driver, how much brakes you are applying, how many times you are changing gears etc. In Linea, you dont have to shift gears until you go below 30/40 kms per hour. So you dont have to change gears frequently. This is my personal experience with Fiat Linea.

Jai, you are absolutely right. my fiat MJD emotion has clocked around 10000kms & i have observed that on highway runs the fiat engine consistently clocks a mileave of 20km/lit or over. as you mentioned you can increase the mileage further by some sensible driving, less use of clutch/gear change since the engine is well tuned to run on higher gears even until 30-40kmph speeds. the only problem i have come to observe is the low clearance which is a worry if road condition is bad or while driving in rains when you cannot be sure how deep the next ditch would be.
