Here is an exclusive premier show of the produce from my roof top. After a season of Fresh Mint, now it is the time to showcase chrysanthemum flowers. This year, I have been clicking the photos from the very beginning. Starting from the time we planted these a couple of months back and all the way till now, you can see the same through these pics. Not much work done by me this year, full credit to my parents for taking good care of these plants! Hard work always pays off, I can kill a lot of time watching these colorful flowers at my rooftop!

I am heading over to Coorg tomorrow morning for a 2 days trip. Mr. Mohan,
I’ve been growing chrysanthemum since two years in my backyard. Off late, the rate at which it flowers has declined drastically. It has also caught on some pests. I don’t know what type of pests they are, but they are white in color and look like lice. How do I get rid of them?

I’m sorry to interrupt in between, but, I believe the white insects you’re experiencing on your chrysanths are white mealybugs. Here’s a wiki image of these: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/ee/Ladybug%28india%29.jpg
These are extremely hard to get rid off because of their tendency to hide in places hard to reach. I’m facing these in my chrysanths and my hibiscus plant and these occasionally spread to other plants like marigolds and other seasonal flowering plants I grow. I haven’t been able to completely get rid of these, by either using an insecticide, as these have a white waxy coating on their bodies which protects them. I think the best protection is to get rid of these by a jet of water or by manually removing them.

yes! exactly those ones in the pic! i have tried using jets of water and also dusting ash (suggested on another site online). But it hasn’t helped much.

That’s the real problem. I’ve failed time and again with a lot of such remedies to get rid of these. A few forums suggested use of diluted dishwash before using insecticide. It failed. Another forum suggested using water streams, but, it failed too. I put this info up in my blog too, for fellow gardeners like you. These mealybugs are quite deadly for the plants, and are very seriously damaging my hibiscus plant, but, I’ve decided to fight back.

I found this website searching for growing sevanthige. We will be moving into a new flat in bangalore and have a small garden. I would like to grow these in my garden. I would like to know when is the best season to plant these, now during summer or wait till june for the monsoon to begin. Thanks

The right time to plant sevanthige would be around June/July, just when the monsoons are about to begin. Since the summer is getting really hot, it would be good to wait till then 🙂
