Happy Deepavali

Greetings to one and all on this special occasion of Deepavali. May millions of lamps illuminate your life with endless joy, love, prosperity, health, wealth and happiness. Wish you and your family a very happy Deepavali. This festival is celebrated to signify victory of good over the evil within an individual. The below quoted Gayathri Mantra summarizes the same while it can be used as an recitative instrument for meditation. The right way of celebrating the festival is by lighting diyas – cotton string wicks inserted in small clay pots filled with oil. See the image below. I clicked this image last year during Deepavali, the clay pot was gifted to all of us at Yahoo!. I have the collection of all 4 years Diwali gifts by my employer, including this years 2 clay diya’s filled with wax.

I wish to emphasize on how we are celebrating Deepavali in recent times. For most of us, this festival is all about fire crackers! We all know that the environment is getting polluted never like before. By lighting crackers, we are adding more woes that contribute to global warming. Let us all celebrate deepavali by

  • Lighting the oil lamps made of clay pots.
  • Pledging to use only CFL (compact fluorescent lamp) or LED lamps.
  • Saying no to crackers. I know it is tough if you have kids, but it is an opportunity to educate them about pollution and bring in awareness.
  • Let us make a prompt attempt to minimize fireworks if not possible to avoid completely.

Let us celebrate the festival of lights by celebrating it in right way. Let us enjoy the festival as well as help our nature to stay greener for some more time. Go *Green* starting this Deepavali!

  2. As far as crackers are concerned, it is the other way round in my house. I am more fond of them than my 13 year old son who chides me saying they cause noise as well as air pollution!

  3. Hi Mohan,

    I wondered when I started to read your blog about what are you going to say about fire crackers. I remember when I was studying our group of students being about 100+ would burn more than 10K INR to ashes. Awareness was dim during those days and the nest day the road was full of ashes and remains from the crackers. Yes, its hard to let go of that moment of happiness that one would get from celebrating this occasion and resistance to that urge would be so hard but today we and are Kids must understand that our future will depend on our today. Unless we take care of our today we will not have a tomorrow.
    Thanks for this article which I think is much needed and I envy you that I was not even able to think on this topic. 🙂

  6. Wish you and your family and friends a very happy Diwali. Let’s hope the decibels are lower this year. I read a news report about crackers being very expensive and also in short supply. Hope it deters at least some people from bursting them.

    • Thanks for the wishes Mr. Kumar. Yes, we are abusing mother earth. There is a limit anyone can take and not sure how long we can continue to abuse… there should be an end to this soon.

    P.S.: Some suggestions: You can manage the width of your blog which has increased just because of the icons in the header. In your contact page, the contact form is not working and on the about page, you should link your profile id page [presently you’ve linked it to home page which means I reached my home page on clicking it!].

      I have tested the header with multiple browsers on various operating systems. I didn’t notice any issues, would you mind sharing the exact configuration and what sort of width deviation you are observing? I have corrected the contact form, thanks for reporting it. I didn’t get to learn which profile page you are talking about in ‘About’ page. Appreciate more details on it 🙂

      • 1. I was suggesting that you can remove one icon from the header out of the total 6 icons, the horizontal scroll bar that appears in the bottom may disappear. I mean the blog width.

        2. I mean the facebook link. You have not given the right link in all probability. For example, if you click the FB link on my blog you will be led to my FB profile but when I click on yours I am still led to my profile! Check it from a browser in which you are not logged in.

        • Hi Vikas, I have been thinking of unlinking my facebook profile from here. Thanks! your comment helped me in doing that today. It was not actually an issue with headers.. it was more to do with the CSS. Fixed it now.. and it should be fine 🙂

    Can’t avoid crackers but we have vowed to keep noise pollution to zero this year in our apt complex. a snall step in the rt direction.
