Last week, there was a technical outage that halted the EAMCET counseling in Andhra Pradesh, India. Servers were overwhelmed by the sheer volume of traffic at the AP State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE ) and now the seats allocation process for students seeking admission into various engineering and medical colleges has been rescheduled. Though the government folks may attribute the failure citing the sheer volume of traffic. But I simply don’t buy in that argument. When the officials were aware of the fact that hundred thousand students were seeking admissions across colleges in the state of Andhra Pradesh, how can they miss to plan for proper IT infrastructure to handle the online traffic?
I would attribute this failure to sheer incompetency and mismanagement of the board to handle things in the right way. Key people in that department have miserably failed to estimate and run a simple seat allocation process through online systems. If people get into such critical roles with the help of holes in the form of reservations, this is what one can expect. This is my humble request to all the great Indian politicians once again. Please abolish reservations in all forms from government jobs. If that can’t be done, have the people who are competent enough to estimate, plan and execute things that are of important priorities to citizens. Can any of you imagine the kind of stress and the torture that student and their parents go through during this critical phase? Enough of reservations in education system. I wish not to see the under-performers taking on jobs in the name of reservations while the bright talent is still being left dishonored. No reservations in the jobs please!
Why is this related? AP is the state that has been fighting hard to introduce reservations based on caste! Certainly politicians want to have their own comfort zone by creating such reservations everywhere. Gone are the days when reservations were introduced to promote and bring up the economically weaker sections of the country. Now it is all vote bank and politicians can go any level to preserve their vote bank. My request is very simple. Play not with our lives with this useless reservations. Let right people take on the appropriate positions and scrap all your meaningless reservations at least beyond education.

Hi Mohan,
I am in complete agreement with the views expressed by you.
The lofty idea with which Dr. Ambedkar propounded reservation
was fully exploited by the later day politicians to get votes. It is simple vote bank politics. Policy of reservations really kills the genuine and merit candidates at every point in their growth phase.
Let us hope that things will get better.

I can’t agree more, thinking now hard on how to end this vote bank politics and all other corrupted mechanisms meant to serve genuine purpose.

Feel disgusted being in India every time I read such articles. I don’t have anything different to say Mohan. Wish to see an end for all such issues at the earliest.

Lets hope that day is not too far!

Whenever I read/discuss about reservations, I smhow get a bad feeling. I am personally against any kind of reservation.. be it any! And I feel that every derserving candidate should be able to afford to reach anywhere he/she would like to! Reservation is just a buzzword for politicians to create vote bank on the name of Dalits/Women. Being a woman, I hate being given any special reservation!
If the government really wants to help a needy poor (be it dalit or non-dalit).. they should help them at the primary (grass-root) level. Help them with best education.. help them in learning skills which can help in employment. Have such schemes and not reservations! And if the individuals perform.. they will automatically reach that position.
I completely agree with u that we need first government reforms.. a new young blood can really bring the transformation.

I m glad that there are many people in this great country who are nostalgic to such issues 🙂 Thanks for your views!

I very well accept and support Mohan’s perspective. But at the same time I am afraid how many people can really understand the ROOT CAUSE of the problem. Our Constitution Maker – Dr. Ambedkar has cleraly mentioned that the concept of reservations and helping the poor (Backward??) to grow (economically??) holds good if it is followed for 10-20 years. Here, the people (can I call politicians or others?) has taken the meaning in other way. People took it as 10-20 decades (or centuries). If this continues, a day definitely comes for OCs to fight for having some (considerable) percentage in the reservations system.
Technically speaking, the Counselling hiccups clearly project the importance of PROPER TESTING (after all I am a tester and I see the things around me as tester).
Mohan says
Thanks for your views. Yes, things like this will continue as long as we don’t get the new blood into our political system at one go. Hehehe.. very nice way of looking at the root cause by being a tester 😛
