Windows guy becomes a Mac guy…

June 8, 2009 in apple, computers, tech | 10 Comments

I have been a PC guy with Microsoft windows OS all these days until a couple of months back. Now I have started loving Mac more than anything! Not that I hate windows, but  just that I am enjoying to work more with Mac. Thankfully, I don’t see any more ‘Blue screens of Death‘. I shifted to Ubuntu long back on my home computer but still I was running with Windows on office notebook, HP’s NC6400. I never liked HP notebooks after my initial liking towards Dell Latitude D610, which still rocks. But the HP notebook I was using at work died in less than 2 years, it was not even booting. At the same time my number was on top of the queue to get a mac. When I went to IT desk, an all new Macbook Pro was waiting for me!

Specs as below:
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2 GB DDR3 SDRAM, 232 GB Serial ATA, 15.4-inch LED-backlit display 1440×900, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M and 9600M GT 256 MB, DVD/CD SuperDrive, Mac OS X 10.5.x

macbook_proHere is the list of things that I like the most on this macbook. First comes the performance and looks, so far I haven’t seen any application crashing with errors. It was a bit tough to get used to in the beginning with a touchpad having no buttons. But not any more! it is so easy to use even my 4 year old nephew knows how to operate use some of the applications! That is the level of usability I am enjoying on this macbook :)   This mac is the thinnest compared to others note books I have used so far. The single piece aluminum case looks stunning and the black keyboard gives feather touch feel. Some of my colleagues didn’t like the keyboard, but I am okay with that. Only thing that bothers me is the highly gloss screen that results in lot of glaring effect at times. On full charge, the battery lasts for 5 hours!

Migration of mails from Outlook to Entourage has been easy. I still have MS office for Mac :) . Macros in Excel doesn’t load properly on mac. Apart from that I have no complaints about mac. Today, I had to work on a colleagues windows box (sadly on HP nc6400) for a while and I was not comfortable using the touchpad on that… that is the kind of addiction now with macbook. I am certainly enjoying the better than windows usability features and power of linux, both on one machine ‘The Mac’. A new ‘mac guy’ has born in me for sure! What about you? still on windows or already thinking of changing to mac?

@Srinath
Yup.. Mac rocks the most!

@Manjunath
Most of the predominant hardware manufacturers do support Mac now. Since I am not sure about what h/w you are talking about, I really can’t comment on that. Atleast I have had no issues connecting to my external drives, camera, mobile etc.,

Hey Mohan, is it the same Mac that was talked about at Apple’s WWDC? Even I am planning to buy one. Any idea on how much it costs in India?

@Kishore
Well, the new mac being talked about lasts about 7-8 hrs of battery life. But mine works for 5 hrs. So, I assume except battery and Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6), rest all is the same :)

@tarun
I have no clue about the price in India since I got this mac from my office, it is my work notebook :)

“Thankfully, I don’t see any more ‘Blue screens of Death‘” :o

That ain’t always happen in windows , i used both Mac and Windows from ages, but i like windows most of the time because we get so many software goodies and other option where in mac we wont, and people buy mac only because of its Glossy UI design and for prestige ;)
