Save Water, Save Life!

September 16, 2009 in learning, my life | 29 Comments

It was a great Monday morning and as usual I was on my way to catch the office cab. Though it is less than 200 mts that I need to walk to catch the cab, I was walking at my own pace taking deep breaths of the fresh morning air and there by getting ready to face yet another new week. This little fountain caught my attention in the mean while. It was hardly 15 mts away from the 100ft ring road that connects Mysore and Hosur roads. A bit surprised to see such beautification efforts being taken by our govt agencies in the form of fountains like this… Ah let me stop the sarcasm here!

Save_WaterThanks to BWSSB and PWD who repeatedly keep digging up roads and re-asphalting them again in the crappiest form. This little ‘on-road fountain’ is the result of one such goof up by our civic bodies. Upon seeing this fountain, I was happy momentarily to click this pic with my good old k750i but at the same time I was cursing the people for leaving it this way. Called up the BWSSB dept folks after reaching office and complained about this. They registered my complaint and seem to have fixed the water leakage. I am glad they acted swiftly and saved some water!

Upon seeing this initially, I had few options in hand. I could have simply ignored or possibly blame them and move on. But I chose a different path to ‘Be The Reason’ and got it fixed. May be that the government folks are lame, certainly not that bad off late. We should bear the responsibility of informing the appropriate bodies at least. I am very sure, a bit of common sense from each of us can amount to a lot of good things. Just try once, I am sure the kind of joy you feel cannot be expressed!

Have you ever thought of finding solutions than cribbing on any issue? Feel free to share your experience :)

I forgot to mention – the photo you have clicked is too good. I could spot the tiny water droplets in air. Great shot! Can’t believe you clicked that with your mobile phone :)

A report says, the future wars between countries are going to happen for water. Our kids will not have water even for basic necessities in a few decades time. Thsi is a very very scary scenario. I do my best by, washing my vehicles once a month only with minimum water required only and that too with shampoo, so that dirt goes off at first attempt, plugging all water leakages in my house, switching off the water motor which takes water to the overhead tank five minutes before it gets full, flushing the toilet jsut enuf till it is cleared and not entirely, taking a bucket bath and not shower bath.

Dear Iyappan,
Thanks for your ideas on saving water. I really appreciate that and I am sure many people reading this will be inspired by your comment.

On a similar note, there are electronic auto monitors for motors. These automatically switch on and off whenever water goes below and above threshold points there by saving both power and water. I have a similar one installed at my house. You can come over anytime and take a look :)

Thank you!
Absolutely… it is always better to start with things which are under our control and then aim for bigger ones with community help. I am just doing my part to bring in the awareness. Hope people get serious on such small things which result in big yields!

Nice one Mohan
2 yrs Back even I wrote a Poem on WATER … here it is

THE WATER STORY

I make people clean,i flow through the showers.
I make plants grow, i help grow flowers.
I flow through the rivers, i feel so good.
When it comes to save me , Why everyone so rude?

Don’t be so ignorant, try to understand me
I am for you all, open your eyes and see
It will get late, It will get over
Do something now, Its now or never

I see people brushing, i see people shaving.
I get wasted all over, but people keep ignoring.
I love them all, but i am neglected.
I do so much for all, but its never reflected.

Thanks Disha! Getting inspired is not enough… hope most of us act accordingly as and when something like this is happens. Like some of the comments above, I am so glad to see that people around us are really cautious on water consumption. Hope it gets into everyone’s mindset.

It is sometimes very ironical that we teach and preach our children about saving water etc. However, when it comes to practice we quietly choose to ignore it. As an IT professional i have lived in places where there was never a paucity of water but it is very sad to see that what is just another commodity for me is almost a struggle for people who might be just living a few KM’s from my place. Mohan, the article puts it pretty candidly to us, that unless we act now there wont be much left to repent later. Great effort by calling up the BWSSB ….and great surprise that the acted efficiently!! Alls well that ends well :-)

hey ! thks a lot for giving me this link. more then farm ville review i liked ur article on save water. u did a good job not just by calling the BWSSB but putting up this article as well. sometimes the solution to every problem is rt in front of us but we chose to ignore it and keep cribbing about it. what u did was a simple thing which any of us could do but we never choose that option or maybe it never occurs .ur article and ur action both were quite an eye opener.keep up the good work .looking forward for more of such posts

Good Food for Thought
Rain water harvesting is another good solution. Every building should have a rain water harvesting mechanism. It should be made compulsory in all buildings.

That is anyways being enforced by BBMP folks in Bangalore. Not just that, they recently passed a resolution which stated that Solar Water heating system is a must to get the electricity connection for a newly built house! I am so glad that the government agencies are thinking in the right direction and enforcing step by step at the same time.

Good one Mohan! I crib a lot about such things, never though ( my pessimistic mind) to actually go ahead raise the issue and try getting it solved. I shall keep this act in mind cos of your blog :)

Great to see such action and reaction. We run a small NGO striving to address the same issue albiet from a differernt perspective.

The need to contribute on an individual level, as a common citizen, spurred us to develop an inexpensive “foot operated tap”. This can be retrofitted on any sink tap.

The amount of water, that would otherwise be wasted while one brushes or shaves or washes at the sink is reduced by almost 70%.

Every drop is precious. But do we care enough?

Please visit our site and participate in this campaign.
