In the Limelight of Print Media

February 6, 2010 in bangalore, my life | 51 Comments

It has been a great fortnight so far with a couple of mentions of self and this blog in the print media. Yes! an article named ‘Adopt an Animal & get Tax Benefit‘ posted on this blog has made it to an English daily featuring local news from Bangalore called Bangalore Mirror. The second mention on the occasion of Bus Day in Bangalore. See the attached clippings extracted from the paper.

Bangalore Mirror - Jan 25th, 2020 : Page 12Bangalore Mirror - 4th Feb '10 : Page 4

Though it makes me feel happy about getting such a public attention through the media, that was never the intention or motive. It just happened to share some useful information through this blog and glad that the media was good enough to support the cause. A big thanks to all my blog readers who helped in spreading the awareness on some of these social issues. With your continued support, I strive my best to bring in more of such articles on this blog.

At the same time, I wish to vent out my frustration on the print media. Similar to what many of you have been fed up of the media being rude towards providing credit to the copyright holder of any piece of text or photo, I too had to settle for just a mention of my blog URL in the article. Though Bangalore Mirror picked up most of the images from the article on my blog, they seem to have few good photo editors who are skilled enough to remove the watermark on those images too before sending them for print. See the print version of Page 10 published on 25th Jan 2010 by Bangalore Mirror – all those animals/birds were published on this article. You cannot find the water mark of ‘mohanbn.com’ on any of those photos in print edition. I fail to understand why the media acts so harsh to provide not the due credit! Dear media friends, be good to all and don’t be self centered. Learn to honor the copyright holder.

Another good thing happened yesterday, related to Bus Day again :) . I had posted an entry to the bus day contest conducted by AskLaila.com and we won special goodies! They have been kind enough to send 10 world cinema DVD’s along with 10 PotLuck discount vouchers for all those colleagues of mine who were featured in that photo. Thank you AskLaila. With that motivation, I am in the process of running a contest for my blog readers soon. Stay tuned…

CONGRATULATIONS MOHAN !!You are right the media should have given your web page the credit it deserves.Removing the watermarks …..have you contacted them?

Reply

6 Mohan February 6, 2010 at 5:48 pm

Thanks Kavita! They did contact me before publishing, I wish they had preserved the water marks… They have mentioned my blog URL on page 12 though most of the images are published in page 10. Ofcourse, there was a continuation note at the bottom of page 10 to head over to page 12. Since this was my first stint with media, decided not to make noise about it.

wow..congratulations…

its truly amazing, i just read that my friend Carma had full featured article for her hobby of belly dancing.I was quite amazed ! and now this!
wow!

i am loving this…

that water mark thing is just wrong…that is why i have heard that bloggers add smaller, fewer pixels ones on their blogs…

i am just glad that with this blog, i have found wonderful bloggers whom i would love to meet in real life too…

Thanks shraddha! Adding low resolution pics is one of the strategies adopted by bloggers off late along with copyright water mark. Still some folks in the media are meddling with those too! Hope they learn to respect appropriately in future. They should really feel ashamed for simply using such material without due credit to the author/copyright holder.
Sure, look forward for a day when we all get to meet up in person!

Hey Lakshay! nice to have known you through the blogosphere. I would love to help out, but the very fact that you so self centered makes me go a bit reluctant. Well, I would have really appreciated if you had commented something relevant to this article instead of writing your comment in no connection with this one! I do understand that you are very new to blogosphere and hope you get over this! That is the very first etiquette!

Way to go, Mohan!

Congratulations on the good media attention to your blog! :) But the fact that it has come with some cheeky work involved, makes it a bit bitter. I reckon, communicating with the paper may, at least, coerce them to publish a corrigendum or so in a bid to avoid more of a discomfiture.

But the bottomline is – Blog on to your goal, Mohan! Cheers!!!

Thanks for the support and the motivation Shrinath. Like I have mentioned before, I am fine with this incident for publishing my blog URL on the article if not for any credit over images. Thanks again for all the wishes!

Hey Mohan
COngratulations…..coming from the Media industry I can understand your discontent as regards to our treatment of copyrights. While the act is inexcusable but sometimes the impending deadlines lead to erroneous omissions. However literary hijacks are an absolute crime. Hope I dont end up being a criminal :) .
All the best!
Nitin
