BITS pilani : Pursuing higher studies

July 17, 2008 in bits, learning, my life, yahoo | 248 Comments

I am happy to announce that I have joined BITS pilani to pursue my higher studies. Starting this 19th, my weekends would be productively invested towards achieving my postgraduatation. I have been approved to take admission into MS programme in Software Engineering from this premiere institute.

The duration of this course is 2 years (4 semesters) and it is being offered in collaboration with my employer Yahoo!. This is one more benefit that yahoo is offering to its employees starting this year. I am preveliged to be in the very first batch of such a collaborative program. Classes will be conducted in the office premises during weekends. It may be a bit difficult to manage work, studies and personal life. Thanks to my family members who have pledged support to realize my dream of getting masters from a renowed institution. Wish me all the best :)

Hi Mohan you have not shared the information about what is the fees and eligibility criteria for the Program and is there any entrance exams like that ?

@Netnarcotic : since this program is offered in collaboration with Yahoo!, i don’t need to pay any fee as such… Benefit for Yahoo! employees. Eligibility is that one should have a atleast 1 year industry experience + a consistent scoring of >60% in all the semesters during graduation.

Hi Partha sarathy,
Yes, Dean of BITS Pilani delivered a message which was very innovative and informative. The Dean’s message from BITS Pilani which was flashed at the time of orientation stated

“July 19, 1969 Apollo 11 went to Moon Orbit and July 19, 2008 BITS Yahoo! inititaive takes off to Excellence Circuit which is yet another Landmark in Industry University Partnerships. Hearty Welcome to the first Batch students and Thanks to all from Yahoo! for making it happen.”

Btw., Dr. BR Natarajan was at Yahoo! today to meet us and he did mention about reading my blog too!

Hey Manoj,
Well, I’ll answer that.
You decide all the way from the time of your classes to the Professors you’d like to study under. The vibrant campus life is unparalleled by any other college. Departments like Arts and Deco, HDC and many more are completely managed by students and provide a lot of extracurricular activities to try your hands on (They should not be compared to clubs at other colleges). Even the mess at Pilani (0ver 6 crores turnover in a semester) is managed completely by students all the way from recruiting the workers and managing them through the year. The teaching methods are obviously innovative with no attendance rule! You are expected to take up the responsibility of your studies from first day onwards. BITS boasts of one of India’s top 5 entrepreneurship centers too. The Oysters (VLSI) lab at BITS Pilani is unparalled by any other institute in India. The practice school system at BITS is something NO other institute in India has: it is compulsory for students to go for a 6 month internship (along with 1 1/2 month internship) to a reputed company (There are 200+ such companies which have tie ups with BITS including Yahoo, Microsoft, Google, Dreamworks USA, Infineon Technologies Singapore etc.)
Another feature which is found in BITSians is their love for their alma mater. BITS Pilani boasts of illustrious alumni base including Hotmail Founder, Sabeer Bhatia, CEOs and/or founders of Dabur, Tansihq, Onida, SAIL, Samsonite, Amkette, Dell, Microtek, Citibank, Airtel North, ICICI, IDBI etc. (http://bitsaa.....inbusiness). There are also over 314 documented BITSians teaching at various universities across the world including over 200 in the US.

There are a MILLION other reasons how BITS sets itself apart from other colleges, and if I sit and count them, I can fill pages over pages. Look here: http://bitsia.....ogspot.com to know a little more about BITS.
I hope I answered your question!

Hi Akshay: Thanks very much for the detailed and insightful response. I have read many good things about BITS and to have a alumni vouch for it adds credence to whatever little I have learned. For a student who has a engineering bent of mind, but is unsure what stream to major in, is there an option to change majors once admitted or does the institute offer an exposure to general engineering discplines initially and let the student select a major in, say, 2nd year or so. What options does the instititue offer?

Mohan : Thanks for having a blog and good luck.

Hi Manoj,
Yes. One of the features that BITS provides (Again, something which no other Indian university provides) is the concept of a Dual Degree. There might be similar named programs in IITs/Other universities but they are quite different. In BITS almost every student gets a chance to get a dual degree – two separate degrees within a span of 5 years. So I have friends who pursued EEE with CS (So you get 2 BE degrees in the end), CS with Bio (1 BE and 1 MSc Degree!), Phy with EEE, or any such combination. You can choose your second degree after the first year. Also the top 20 students every year in each campus, get the chance to transfer to any degree they would want to. This option opens up a plethora of opportunities since it makes inter disciplinary research possible as well. The first year for ALL degree students in common, so it doesn’t matter with which degree you joined BITS. You can actually find EVERYTHING about BITS at http://bits36......com/forum .
Hope this helps! :)

If there is a tie up between your employer and BITS, get in touch with your HR and they would let you know more details and the procedure to apply for the same. If you prefer to do it without employers support then you should be looking out this space – http://tinyur......com/4et97 for admission notification.

Hi Mohan,
glad to read your bolg.
one query, the bits site claims, that MS degree will be provided who will score CGPA of 5.50 and no “E” grade. But I have got 5.46 ~ 5.5 and no “E” grade in any of the semesters.(till 3rd semester and only Dissertation is leftFOR 4th semester).
so have i cleared this MS?(In DISSERTATION only grades are provided and no marks).

Reply

30 Mohan December 4, 2008 at 11:52 am

@anmol
As far as I know, one needs to score a CGPA of 5.5 or more. If it is marginally less, still there is no option but to take up one or more subjects again and score high marks so that the criteria is met. I am not sure if there is any alternative to it. I welcome the readers to comment/correct me on this if I am wrong.

First of all thanks for this wonderful space!!
I would be great if you can guide me with this.
I work in HP and I am in to technical support with a goal to switch over to development either internally or outside. I have a 3 year diploma in computer science and engineering (2003-04) and BCA degree(Distance education) (2008). I got in touch with BITS and they said like I can do MS Information System.
My company does not seem to fund/ sponsor my education.
How would I go ahead and do this without the support from the company and do I need to be employed till the course if finished?
Also, is there any contact center/ person in bangalore whom I can go meet to take help? My understanding is that this MS information System carries more value compared to regular BE/B Tech. Isn’t that true.

Thanks in advance

Hi Mohan and All, I requested my ex-manager (still with our company) to be my mentor. He was astonised by the clauses under ‘Information to Mentor’, which read-’…Mentor might have to allocate 4-6 hrs per week….Mentor will have to meet 3 times a week with the student…Mentor has to be with Student for Seminar/VIVA…etc’. Is it true that Mentor needs to spend so many hours with the Student? Is it not ok if i just keep him informed about my progress so that he can know that i am completing my assignments on time? Also i would like to know if we can change Mentor(without changing organisation) mid-way through the course? Can we change the Mailing address mid-way through the course? Well, the mentor is to help out the students as and when they need any assistance wrt subject topics and their usage in real time project work. Mentor concept exists for distance learning, but in my case it is a collaborative learning in association with my employer. Hence we don’t have the concept of a ‘Mentor’ here.

Well, BITS claim that they do an extensive research on the industrial trends and accordingly tweak the course content. Hence it certainly has a value when it comes to the kind of course and their rigor of high standards set towards the exams. If your intent is just to pass through, this course is not for you. Also, you may want to note that, you will not be able to do PhD from any other university other than BITS after this course.

Thanks for visiting my blog and for your comment. Both SS & SE are more or less the same except that SE gives more importance for software applications applications where as SS gives equal importance to applications and implementation of these applications at hardware level.

Since this distance learning programme is not AICTE approved, many universities might not allow you to do Phd. However, you can do Phd from BITS :)

There is a change in depth to which we learn during graduation and masters. Of course, you can seek admission through US universities. Not sure if you are aware that BITS MS course through distance learning mode is not AICTE approved.

81 Aravind July 30, 2009 at 1:00 pm

Its a real pity that this is not considered as Master’s Degree from other universities. Even after studying for 2 years and clearing exams….if you dont get a master’s then is all the hard work worth it???
May be BITs can make this a 3 yr course and try to get an approval by AICTE….

I was planning to enroll for this but after coming to know that it is not approved by AICTE, I am having second thoughts now……

Any comments??

Aravind,

People do MS (part time) keeping many views in mind like,
>Self satisfaction and prestige
>Further studies
>Add weight to resume for good job
>Promotions
>To continue learning ….
.
.
. etc
For further studies like PhD some universities will consider only AICTE approval, (but this not approved, here u can do PhD @ BITS :) )
In jobs when there are two 2 people filtered for Team lead or manager post, if u have done MS here it will be a value add.
So what is your view,
all the best.

83 Aravind July 30, 2009 at 2:16 pm

Of course, it is true that this done for many reasons like you mentioned.
My requirements are:
1. Knowledge updating
2. Getting a PG degree.

Now by doing this I get only one. Later if I want to get into good institutes like IITs or IISc’s for further studies, I am back at square one( a bachelor’s degree holder and not a master’s degree guy). Also for certain job requirements in public sector and private sector this MS is not considered as a regular M.Tech or M.E.
Now, that’s my problem.

However, I did a lot of research on getting a PG by distance learning, I could find only 2 institutes BITS and Manipal who offer a distance learning PG. I guess Manipal MS is also not AICTE approved.

Let me know if any others are there…

Since I am working and I am not in a position to leave my job and do a full time PG, BITS MS is the only option. I think, all people in my situation finds themselves in this soup.

oh!! this was supposed to be a small post….sorry

84 Mohan July 30, 2009 at 4:47 pm

I don’t know how long the AICTE accreditation will count as the central govt is thinking of abolishing the AICTE to bring in a central council for all higher education. So, things will change a lot over the next couple of years. We can only wait and watch :)

Hi Mohan,
I had applied to bits in 2006 but couldn’t get through.. The reply that i received was probably the cut off % was more..
Later I stopped trying for it again.. Now I am interested after having 5+ years of IT experience and esp MS in SS…
Do you think I am eligible with Bachelors 66% and IT experience of 5 yrs that includes 1 year of onsite experience…
I don’t know how they filter.. But thought of checking with u, if you could give your comments if any..

Regards,
Anil

Anil, sorry to know that you were not offered admission sometime back. As far as my knowledge goes, BITS does admit those who have consistent 60% plus starting class X till graduation. More over the industry experience that you have is sufficient enough to seek the admission. Please try again and I am sure you will get it :)

I am very much impressed by your prompt reply..
Currently I have few queries like:
I am outside of India on a long term work permit in MNC.. So in that case what could be the max number of years that are given for a person to complete the course.. I heard we can have breaks but not sure how it works.
Could u please clarify if u r aware of this..

Anil

Anil, Since you have to personally appear for exams, not sure if BITS conducts exams outside India. I know for sure that they have a campus in Dubai but not sure if that offers distance learning programmes. I am sorry, but I have no clue about the breaks that you can take to complete the course :(

Hi Mohan,
Nice to see this conversation got much of information thru this… I have few queries for the SS course. I have decided to go for this course, I have completed BE (E&TC) from Pune university. My aggregate is around 58% for engineering. Am I eligible for any of the distance learning MS/ME course in BITS? Also I am working for MNC for which I may need to go abroad in that case is there any provosion so that I can appear for the examination once I get admission for the course. Just to add.. I am working as a Software engineer with 2 and half years of experience (Mainframe Technology) .

90 Mohan August 3, 2009 at 8:23 pm

Prashant, one of the pre-requisites to seek admission for me was to have 60%+ through out from Class X till graduation. You may want to check with BITS DLP to get more info on that now. Once you get more clarity on that you can think of your 2nd question. Wish you all the best.

But I am c onfused as to which to go and that to “part time/distance learning”. Also I am in Software Quality field, so again confused to do MS in which field?
Is there any MS in Software Quality Management? If yes then would it be recommendable to do MS in ‘Quality’ or ‘System Software’? Which one would be an added advantage?

Please help me and guide me in resolving this ocnfusion. And also please give me details and where to get more help regarding same.

Hi Sachin, you need to make up your priorities first. If you wish to be in management roles, think of MBA. Otherwise opt for MS. If you chose to be in technical field, MS in SS will give you better prospect when compared to QM. Yes, BITS does provide MS in QM Check their site for more information.

I would like to pursue MS from DLP BITS but the problem is that I can take up only the off campus mode (since my company does not have a collaboration with BITS). How does the course delivery work in this mode? And given my profession, there is ample chance of me traveling abroad for short and long term. Does BITS provide us a way to tackle this?

Reply

98 Mohan September 8, 2009 at 11:46 am

Hi Manoj, it is very much the same. Probably you need to attend classes in some specific centers over the weekends and take up exams as usual. If you are on travel, you can check with the center coordinator to see how best it can be worked out. Incase you cannot take up exams for a given schedule, you can always opt for make up exams later on. I would suggest you to talk to BITS DLP contact person to get more details.

I am bit confused to manage the studies and job, currently need of clarification for few questions below
1. Is it fruitful doing MS ?
2. How do they compute grade ?
3. What is role of mentor ?
4. Is it possible to change the exam location of center such as chennai or Bangalore ?
5. I had chosen course (Software systems) is really worth ?
6. How the pass percentage computed ?
7. Is the MS degree really worth in current IT industry ?
Can any one help me out..

Hi Anand, here is the info as far as i know :)
1. Depends on your priorities and future goals.
2. Relative grading
3. To guide and help mentee as and when required
4. I am not sure about this. Check with BITS co-ordinator
5. Again depends on your priorities. There is distinct difference between Software systems and Software engineering.
6. relative grading and depends on the instructor who set the exam paper.
7. this question is no different #1

All the best.

Hi Chinmay, sorry! somehow I missed to answer your query.
Going by the BITS site, it seems like having a mentor is a must for distance learning course if you company is not tied up with BITS for collaboration course. I would suggest you to get the clarity on this by contacting the BITS distance learning program division. Details are available on their site. Yes, there would be weekend contact classes. Depends again on where you live. Responsibilities of a mentor or clearly laid out on their site again.

To seek higher positions, will it be beneficial to have MS in SS followed with an MBA(Distance) or to go for MBA directly.

118 Mohan October 23, 2009 at 9:29 am

Venkat, when you say management – you have to be more precise! Tech Manager or general HC manager. If you are more oriented towards technology and love to be a geek, better choose MS… the experience will anyways helps you to become a manager over a period of time. Otherwise, go for MBA so that you don’t need to be too technical :) … after all it boils down to individual preferences and career goals!

Hi Swati, I had a discussion about this with the professor today. According to him it is possible to do Phd from any University in India after this 2 year MS programme under distance learning mode. The reason being that the UGC recognizes any course that offers a minimum of 32 hrs+ of contact class per subject. Since BITS program does fall in to that guideline, it is possible to do PhD from any Indian university or International University.

Hope that helps.

1. Exams will not be that easy for sure. Open book exams are more tough!! See my experience on BITS open book exams here.
2. Since I am undergoing the collaboration course, we don’t need to visit Pilani campus. Please check with your center co-ordinator for more info on that.
3. Relative grading :)
4. We have the weekend contact classes in our office premises, this happens on every saturday for all the subjects pertaining to that semester. I haven’t accessed online lectures since we have professors visiting us every week!
5. Books will be available in all leading book stores.. may be Sapna or Book Paradise etc.,

You have to pay fee only i you are offered.
If the status of your admission says “MS Software Systems offered”, the link pointing to your web-page has an offer letter and course structure in html format.
If not offered, there will be nothing in your web-page except the status.

Fee payment should be made through DD in favour of “BITS-PILANI”

Hi Mohan,

Lovely blogging!! I got the refernce of your website (and blogging) from Hemant Minocha. I got the offer from BITS for MS in Software Systems, and submitted the fees as well. Course likely to commence from early December. Wanted to know which subjects did you take in your first sem. and what is the level of the question papers (I think you must have gone through the mid-sem exams). May be would like to meet you over the weekend as well. I will give you a call as well during the weekend.

Thanks for this blogging and networking people who are doing MS under WILP from BITS. I would also like to know about people who have enrolled for this programme in Nov, 2009, so that we can actually get together and look forward for contributions for achieving this.

Cheers!!

Hi Mobashir,

I too applied for MS and submitted the fees as well. But in the BITS site, it still shows that the fees was not received. Can u check yours and tell us whether they have updated their site.

Thanks in Advance

Hi Padmini,

When did you post the DD ?
FYI..
Actually i had posted it last saturday in DTDC and bits website updated yesterday evening saying ” Fee has received”.
When i checked with DTDC on thursday morning, they replied me that the courier has been dispatched to BITS on tuesday itself.
I assumed BITS has taken 2 days to update the same in Website.
They allotted the ID number and Bits Virtual University log-in ID and passwd.

Hi,
I think it is good if I put some info on the subjects of MS-Software System. It may help to those who have done their MCA from VTU and want to do MS (like me).

Following are the subjects which are offered in our College ( NMAM IT Nitte, I have done my MCA in this institution).

BITS ZC417 Managerial Communication
BITS ZC481 Computer Networks
IS ZC332 Database Systems & Applications
EA ZC451 Data Structures & Algorithms
SS ZG514 Object Oriented Analysis and Design
SS ZG516 Computer Organization & Software Systems
SS ZG562 Software Engineering & Management

The rest subjects are there as optional in MCA syllabus. So I think in Blore many colleges provides all the subjects.

I think for us it does not makes any much differences.

This is just my point of view.

As per the BITS Pilani coordinator,we will get the regular degree of MS however the handout is having the Title “Distance Learning Programme Division”.

Dilip, BITs has two wings. One for full time courses and another for Distance learning programmes. All the integrated/collaboration courses are a part of distance learning programs. However, the degree would be awarded as mentioned like MS in SE/SS etc., The fact that it is a distance learning program cannot be ruled out!

Nice to know about your studies. Well, even I am in the same phase as that of you! Done with 3rd sem exams and need to start with final semester dissertation. As per my co-ordinator, your mentor has to have either 10+years of work experience or a masters degree in computers. I am not very clear about the roles and responsibilities of Supervisor and the examinor. All i know at this point of time is that you need to have a mentor who will be assessing your project as well as guiding you through any hurdles you may encounter. I shall revert back when I get more details :)

1. I am currently out of India on a long term assignment in US and would like to persue the program which starts in April’2010. Is there any provision for me to attend online lectures instead of attending the weekend classes? I work for HCL Technologies. Please let me know…
2. Also what I understand from the blogs 132 & 134 is that upon sucessful completion of MS – SS program we can enroll for any distance learning PHD program from any university in India along with BITS Pilani. Can you please give me some universities that offer such PHD’s.

Since mid term would be closed book exam, i suggest you focus on the proofs, numerals, explain this kind of straight forward questions. There won’t be much mind tweaking questions. But in case of open book exams, the game is completely different. I have a post on Open Book exams altogether. Go through it, might help you. Regarding the chapters for each subject, i am sorry but everything is included unless your professor has excluded few! i don’t have any material to share :(
